mic advice?

Post by sheeptuf » Mon Dec 11, 2006 9:36 am

Okay -

So I want to buy a new mic. I already have one AT 4047. I just found a place which has more for a really good price. My question is...

Is it good for me to have another of the same mic, to complete a studio pair?

OR - should I buy a different style of mic (perhaps a tube) so that I have a variety of sounds in my studio? Can I run stereo mic apps with two completely different mics?

The applications will be vary from acoustic guitar, to vocals, to drum kit.

Thanks in advance.

Tuf

Expand your pallette, dude. Unless everything your recording with your AT4047 sounds amazing and you can't imagine a better mic for any purpose (which it might be, I've never used one).

so the 4047 is your only mic?

i would say your next mic should be some cheap 57 quality dynamic, and some sort of "step up" dynamic like a 421/heil 40/re20 etc.

that'll give you some nice choices.

2nds on the Heil Pr 40. I have one and it gets used on toms, guitars, vocals, and voice overs. I imagine it would work with any application you would normally go for a 57 on. Good mics and sometimes you can get deals on these. I found mine for $75 at a Pawn Shop.

The current inventory is...

Cad M9 (low level tube mic)
Cad E300 (Condenser)
lot of dynamics (low level to an EV967)
AKG C3000

Where should I go next?

Looks like you could use a pair of small diaphragm condensors?

you know.. funny. i keep comin' back to the e300. is it the first series? thats the one i have.

i keep thinking that it some sort of "third tier" mic, cause i got it for $200. but it has really performed for me for years. it does some amazing stuff.

anyway, um, what was i sayin'. oh. i dunno i think you should sell the akg c3000 and get a NICE pair of SDCs.

the second 4047 isn't a bad idea at all..that means you can record stereo 4047's..

then again variety is good too..
