Hi Chris!
I had a 16-8-16 Soundtracs, check out my WWW below this post to see a pic. It's preamps were'nt anything like either the Trident 65 or the Sytek I've used in the past. They were more like a cheaper Soundcraft sounding preamp.
Hmmm, I was starting to get sold on this until I saw that. I used a Trident series 65 for a session last summer and it made me absolutely hate the pres on my Ghost and its lack of headroom in the master section. If the pres are no improvement over what I've got, I should probably find something else, huh?
I think he was referring to the soundtracs, not the toft.

What specific part of the Ghost do you find lacking in headroom?

The mic pre's, the buss, the aux's?

the main outs, specifically. it was breaking up something awful on me yesterday. its never broken up so badly on me before, but this mix had a lot going on. this one section in the song specifically - a slower, loud, drone-y section, the guitars were just crackling as the lows swelled.

i've had the subs break up a little on me before, but nothing like this. maybe it just needs to be serviced? i dunno.

i just remember having the meters pinned on that series 65 and it sounded awesome.

Let me just start by saying I'm not a doctor, but....
That sounds to me like either you have an IC chip that has gone bad or your powersupply isn't getting the board the right voltage.
Or, and this is an outside chance, you could be having a +4/-10 issue.
I'd call a tech if I were you.

let me guess, individual levels coming out of your DAW are really hot? using 'all those bits'? either something is really wrong with your Ghost, or something is really wrong with your gain structure practice.... I have a ghost, and while the 2 buss gets a bit cloudy when pushed hard, I can't even manage to get mine to crackle.... just bussed some bassy-dub type material to all 8 busses, cranked them all, cranked all the lows and low mids on the channel EQ, and all I got was a nice round fuzz type saturation....

I would fine a tech to make sure the power supply is good...

another thought.... what are your monitors? does this happen in headphones too? Monitor outs only or Main 2tk outs too?

no DAW there - i have an ms-16.

it def needs some servicing - i had a resistor burn up in one channel making it unusable sometime ago, among other things. and my left channel on the main out loses about 1dB somewhere.

i don't hear it breaking up if i listen off the main outs. but coming back off my hhb burn it plus - is where i hear the distortion. i guess it could be distorting there, i have the input set to about 4. but i've never had an over reading - i have yet (*knocks wood*) in all my years to spike a cdr or dat.

monitors are tannoy active reveals.

I still really desire the 32 channel version..

I have to wait another ten years though when they're on the used market for cheaper.

then i could sell my soundtracs as "vintage", yep, that is the plan.

For those that might not know, that's Malcolm Toft on the left and Rupert Neve on the right.
