Neve Style Output Transformers from Altran

Post by rock777 » Mon Dec 11, 2006 6:53 pm

I just recently ordered some transformers from Steven Smith at Altran. I wired them up to my console preamps and I have got to say that they sound incredible. They added a smooth/colored sound to the EQ's. I have a set of Neve 33118's that I have compared these to and my console preamps now sound very close my Neves. I noticed that these transformers don't saturate in the low frequencies around 20-25 hrz until +24 to +26 db. I think these transformers have cleaned up the low end phase shift my console had. For anybody wanting to balance your direct outs of your console or any preamps that you want to add some Neve color to these are the way to go. Call Steven and listen to some for your self with Your own ears. I am extremely pleased with these transformers and I plan on purchasing more to balance every direct out on my console and I am going to wire a set up on my stereo buss. These are the type of transformers I have been waiting for someone to build. I have a lot of respect for the engineering dept. and Steven Smith at Altran for their reverse engineering.

Great to hear. What transformer did you get, the 600:600 audio tranny, or something special?

I see that they require you to fill out a price request form. Without divulging your price quote, were they reasonably priced?

Just call Steven Smith at 815.455.5650. It is a custom design that they engineered with an extreme amount of attention to detail to get the Neve sound. They are great for unbalanced to 600 ohm balanced. They are very inexpensive.

the xformers on the custom "Avalon" desk at Sear Sound are Altrans. Not the same formula as what you've got it sounds like, but they were both low priced (we bought in bulk obviously though) and very clean. Workmanship was top notch as well. I didn't find they did anything particularly magical to the sound, but I certainly didn't dislike the sound either. If they're making St. Ives/Carnhill replicas now, I'd buy them unheard.

Altran transformers

Post by rock777 » Tue Dec 12, 2006 8:56 pm

These have the Neve sound. Call and get some so they don't stop making them. The transformers that they reverse engineered are the Marinair which are the original Neve transformers. Wade at Chandler is the one who helped them design them. All the way down to the copper windings and the type of Steel that the laminations are made of . It took a few times but they have nailed it. They have the mojo. If they are good enough for Wade they are good enough for me.

Sounds great to hear of an alternative source.

Which of the Marinairs' did they model, the LO1166 or the LO2567? (The 1166 has a gapped core that will take DC, the 2567 will not take DC)

Thanks
Peter

They had a few LO1166 transformers to engineer there transformers after. So yes it is a gapped LO1166 that they have built.

They returned my inquiry e-mail the same day. That says loads about future service.

I'm getting an evaluator and will report.

Happy holidays!

Will they sell without a minimum quantity purchase? I read on another forum that you had to order a minimum of 20-25...

Would these be suitable for the outputs on the Yamaha PM-1000's I'm racking?

Thanks in advance,

Zetajazz44

All,

I'll let you know of my experiences and impressions.

I looking for a Xfmr for a pre design, a microphone design, and I'll also patch one in on an FX send to check how it sounds with familar equiptment.

Happy new year!
