I love ribbons but if I could only have one mic it would not be a ribbon. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I probably agree, but the BeyerDynamic M160 has a pretty high swiss army mic value

I was thinking of that one as I typed that as the possible lone exception. Haven't tried it on vocals though. Can't imagine it in those circumstances. But it's awesome on electric guitar amps. Workable on overheads, snare... you name it. That is one useful ribbon mic.

Wonderful stuff everybody! The M160 is a good one, how about another ribbon-utility suggestion?
Any Omni-utility suggestions?

I've been using my Heil PR-40 on lots of things lately. Floor tom, guitar cabs, voice overs, and most recently on vocals. It's quickly becoming my favorite dynamic although I still use my 57s on guitar cabinets, snare, and toms. If I had more Pr-40s, I might try them on everything at once though.

the pl9 is a great dynamic omni that is pretty flat from 30hz-18khz. this thing always sounds good.

C414 is my go-to mic these days. And a question for all the people out there recommending dynamics, have you ever distant-miked an acoustic instrument with one? What about using a dynamic on a bowed string instrument? Not that I'm dissing on dynamic mics, I just think that condensers are kind of inherently more versatile.

"I own an RE-38N, a rather obscure model that has proven to be the best snare mic I've ever heard."
Hey, thanks for that....

I'm a huge fan of the RE38, but have never tried it on snare....
Kick, yep...

Gotta try that....

Do you futz with the onboard EQ on the RE38, or just go with it flat??

"i'm surprised nobody has brought up a ribbon mic yet... "

I like having a Beyer M500 kicking around at all times for just about anything...
Very versatile mic.

Great on shakers and percussion ODs, and what have you...

An EV RE16 is another good utility mic...

I leave it flat, trust the drummer to have the right snare for the song, and properly tuned. I top mic over the edge of the rim, aimed for the center.
