Mystery equipment on new Shins album
from an interview in Pitchfork:
"Joe [Chiccarelli] did some really valuable consultation with me when I got started recording, and advised me to buy a certain piece of equipment, which significantly helped the sound quality."
But there's no followup question! What is this mystery piece of gear? Time for a TapeOp investigation!

As it was in the begining, so shall it be in the end...

I mean, come on! It's on the internet, so it must be true.Embryo Electro wrote:Actually Im pretty sure it was a set of these bad boys.

Those things are powered the same way my reverb bus is powered. Ya know, the client says more reverb, I look at the reverb fader in DP, act like I'm moving the mouse, and do nothing. Then the client approves of the new reverb setting.
Oh wait... My reverb trick actually works.

there was a whole long thread awhile back about the ethics of the "touch a knob and smile" technique...

I email Joe about this topic.
Here are his words of wisdom, pay particular atten to the second half!
"Over the last few years I suggested a number of things for James to purchase it's all the standard stuff. Audio Technica 4050, Royer 121, Daking Preamp, UA Preamp, Roland Space Echo, Mojave mics, ZVex pedals, Tannoy Speakers, Ultrasone Headphones. But none of it really matters it's just choices.
James is a brilliant and uniquely talented artist. He worked hard on all the vocals for this record and it shows. He's deeply committed to making every line of lyric special and true to his aesthetic.. He was extremely brave and fearless in the studio, for every basic and every overdub. A Producer's dream. The band as well , just great guys and a wonderfully collaborative experience. Three months in Portland, all bliss, the only unfortunate occurance was my near fatal attack from a racoon in the Oregon City wilderness.. But I survived and my scar has faded as well.
Oh But there was one special peice of gear I forgot to mention....................
Cheers, Joe C."

They recorded at Supernatural in Oregon City, OR. They have a HD3 and lots of fancy converters and pres. Great studio.chuckfurok wrote:I was going to post this exact same query! I believe he had the UA pre before hand. Perhaps some super A/D converter? The sound quality on the new album is just astounding, so well produced. Doesn't sound like an 002 to me which is what I think he is using for the home recording stuff.
