If I ever open a studio, I'll call it "Lomosexual's".

Awesome. You need to open a studio, then.

Wow. CoralSound is the gearfreaks paradise. That 80 series Neve Matt Marinelli has is one of the best anywhere. Not to mention the fully restored all germanium transistor Neve sidecar that sits next to it.

Exile is insane. There is like 3 of every single cool thing ever made there. Seriously. 3 of them. Unless they only made two, and then there is two...

Speaking of Lomos, I know I've posted about them before, but you all should really check these out:

My friend Chip builds these..... they're old Lomo valve pres, built into a beautiful rack, and they sound ridiculous...... I use them all the time, and they are completely unlike any mic pre you've ever heard...... color? Oh yes, plenty.......

Showing my ignorance here...

I've noticed that Lomo heads for Oktava MK012 are being offered on eBay recently. As I have a couple of MK012s, I'm interested. Anyone have/use these? If so, what do you think?

the official oktava heads are not Lomos.

Lomo/RTT offer genuine Lomo capsules for the 012s bodies yes, but not Oktava.

these capsules are called M1, M3 and M6. these are true Lomo capsules used in their mics throughout the years, and the capsules used to rework some back to business.

i believe the M1 and M3 are offered by soundroom. the M6 is a special thing alright, and it is only offered directly from Russia.

i got what oktava calls their Lomo capsule, the MK101, and i also have a M1 and a M6.

to sumarize, the MK101 sounds nothing like the RTT/Lomo capsules. the 101 sounds like a ribbon, lush, natural and crude.

the M1 is big and dark, needs some serious juice to shine. the M6 makes for the brightest capsule/mic i've ever used, but in a good way, not in a studio projects way.

the M capsules sound typically big, vintage and airy. they don't run full voltage on the 012 bodies though, so that yields an interesting effect on itself. they're forgiving capsules, very fun, great to have.

if you need transparency though, your best bet are oktava capsules, excelent for the price.

M1, M3 and M6 can be bought here under RTT (michael vladimirsky, a great guy):
