Post by moogrock » Wed Jan 24, 2007 3:23 pm

so yeah...

im verrry curious... and yes i know it varries from record to record and he wasnt into using reverb and was more into rooms/etc...

im talkin' about the classic quick slapback sort of sound...
(also -- esp on the early records the sort of distorting thats going on -- which im assuming is just a hot board to hot tape)

but i also ready something somewhere about how he used some 'instant double track' effect on his vocals...

and its sort of like (which i also love) the slapback on the majority of lennon's solo work...

i did a lil searchin' thru posts and didnt find anything about it...

so c'mon peoples.
lets talk...

besides...
who doesn't LOVE talkin' about jeff lynne...

ADR ADT units in their Scamp racks. ADT=Automatic Double Tracking I don't remember too much about them though. There were certainly others making similar units one would think.

Lennon's slapback was tape delay, usually 15ips, but varisped to taste.

Most of what I've heard or read about that sound from that particular era was that it's ADT units. Lennon was pretty big on it, and Jeff Lynne was big into all things Beatles so I'd imagine it's the same deal...

Great sound though. I should break out the ELO this evening...

im going to experiment some with trying to use my echoplex with the shortest settings and 1 repeat and see how close i can approximate it...

i was planning on seeing if this worked for the vibe i was trying to achieve on this track in the 1st place...

but i thought a lil' research /talking into / about what made lynne's sound would be worth it...

thanks...

oh jeff lynne how i love thee.

Man, I have one of those Line6 Echo Park pedals and I think it sounds great. It really sounds like tape delay with the Modulation up. You can vary it between an old jacked up Echoplex sound and one in better condition. It also has cool reverse and swell settings that actaully work. I bought it for my guitar rig, but it has found it's way into the studio on many recordings cause it's just that cool.

Just for clarity's sake...

The Beatles used ADT (what EMI called their tape delay system to create Artifical Double Tracking), but not an "ADT unit", like the Scamp module (which is just a delay, much like any other)
