I'm not sure what a remote is supposed to offer the project/home studio. I mean, how big a place do you have to have before you start wanting remotes? I always thought that was for places that have dedicated machine rooms off the control room.
And what is a "console grade" mic pre? Like, Mackie 8-bus quality? :)
I'd rather have more higher-quality pres in a rack unit for $1000 than that remote for which I have no desk space.

An interstng detail is it has VU meters only. So when you are setting levels you still have to keep an eye on your AD meters on transient sources like drums to make sure you aren't clipping.
I like it overall though. It is a remote so you can take it across the room when you are recording yourself playing piano or drums, etc.
And I second the "impress the clients piece" notion. Those bakelite's look so retro. Oh sorry, is retro out now. I think the new thing is retro-nuevo. Come to think of it, UA is doing that with their AD's and now this.

Aside from looking cool sitting on the desk, what would you see yourself doing with this thing, and why does it have to be "remote." ???
Couldnt you build pre's into a desk, the way a mastering room puts rack gear in a desk if you are worried about client reactions? [that is a valid aspect of recording studio ownership, BTW].
I just dont understand this piece , I guess.

I whole heartedly greed, but the average guy that barely knows anything about recording himself will think this thing is just what the doctor ordered.joel hamilton wrote:Aside from looking cool sitting on the desk, what would you see yourself doing with this thing, and why does it have to be "remote." ???

It would look cool sitting beside a computer, a mouse pad and a cup of coffee.
Most novice home recorders can't even solder a mic cable let alone creatively rack their own gear into a home made desk or recording centre.
This will be a hit at (insert chain store here).
I'm sure it sounds good, but we have to realize where UA is going with this and what market they are after to get to buy this thing and it does make sense.
I know enough to know that I don't know what I am doing.

Damn at first I thought all of you guys were just straight up being harsh but I then clicked on the link and.....
It looks like a piece of donkey crap...No thanks...Actually if it sounded amazing I'd back off on the harsh comments but everything about this thing screams failure....At least thats my first impression
Peace

I can agree with your logic but a qualified statement would have to be made after a side by side comparasin.ipressrecord wrote:Purchase two EH 12AY7 preamps for desktop tube or a Sytek MPX-4Aii for "console-grade" preamps (4) instead. Money better spent.
Myself, I wouldn't buy this thing, but the pres probably sound decent. We just need someone to comment on its usefullness and sound from someone who has actually heard it.

Agreed. However, there was talk around here concerning the 12AY7 sounding superior to the UA610 for certain applications. I'm assuming that the preamps in that thing are not a new design, but rather a repackaged SOLO/610 or SOLO/110. But I should never assume.Coco wrote:I can agree with your logic but a qualified statement would have to be made after a side by side comparasin.ipressrecord wrote:Purchase two EH 12AY7 preamps for desktop tube or a Sytek MPX-4Aii for "console-grade" preamps (4) instead. I too, wonder how it sounds. It is... rather... ugly... looking.

The preamps aren't either of the current UA designs -

Jeff, I asumed it would be of the 610 type as well.ipressrecord wrote:Agreed. However, there was talk around here concerning the 12AY7 sounding superior to the UA610 for certain applications.
