Sescom Transformers

Post by RodC » Tue Jan 30, 2007 4:10 pm

Anyone used them or heard of them? I have a mixer that has a bunch of them (JBL 5600-2) They sound pretty good, but its a descrete FET mixer. I modded it to have 6 outs. I have another JBL mixer but it has JBL branded trannys. These are a standard octal metal plugin can. They are marked Sescom, Inc - TR-177a

I have a passive DI of theirs that's good, and a mic pre. I think they're known for good trannys.

Thanks Ubertar. I have been browsing their website but I didnt see any preamps, I think I'll take another look. Looks interesting, they even have some replacements for the Altec 1588A preamp cans. They still list a TR series, but nothing in the range of what I have. They do list an R-9 that is a replacement for the JBL 5195. This is prob the closest they list to what I have on the output. Its $130, if thats any indication of quality I hope the ones I have are that good.

I'm going to do a side by side with some of the JBL 5901 trannys.

SIP-8: AUTOMATIC LEVEL CONTROL

SIP-13: DUCKER CIRCUIT

SIP-16: FUNCTION GENERATOR SINE/SQUARE

They even have all their schematics

Looks like fun....

I have an EQ of theirs. Haven't used it in awhile, not sure how it's doing.

I got a couple of Altec mixers loaded with these (11 of them). The can says mc-1 (i think). I even took one apart, just to see the inside. If you're interested, I could take some photos. They're in my 1592 and the.....whatever the companion is to that with 6 pres (they aren't near me at the moment). I think they sound fine. Just a transformer some caps and resistors. I've never a/b'ed them to the 1588b, actually. Just never got around to it.

I've got this eq box of theirs. Unfortunately it didn't make it successfully through the shipping process and I haven't got it fixed yet...

I have one of the old blue passive DI's they made. I like it a lot. I use it on the return of a tape echo.... It is totally well made.

I have purchased a bunch of their transformers. I have four each of the ISO-1 and ISO-2 isolation transformers on hand whenever I go on location or run live sound so I can knock out humming DI or monitor connections. I also bought a pile of the loose transformers inside the line-level ISO tube so I could build them into our live sound rig.
If you have to buy a bunch of their transformers for a project, just contact them directly because they are very agreeable on pricing when you buy quantity, and they're nice folks.
