How is cassette tape inexpensive? It's more expensive than hard drive space per minute. And what happens when you need a tape in the middle of the night?RefD wrote:it IS a blast and you're less afraid to screw with stuff and experiment cos of the format being so inexpensive.
lucky!
At least with digital you can erase anything you don't want to make room for new things. Plus you can always backup projects to cheap CD-R media or DVD.
Sure, you CAN tape over things on cassette, but it's never like the first time.

Lessee....
I can fit two 7:30 songs per 60 minute tape (XLII) for $2 / tape on my 238s. (Or if you're a pop songwriter, you can double it for fitting four 3 min songs... but let's be conservative here...)
For $80 (or the equivalent of a 80GB external HD), I can record 80 songs. Sure, you can fit more than 80 songs on the hard drive, but do you have 80 songs that you've written? Doubt it.
Plus, you commit to 8 tracks. Without all that overdub and virtual track crap, you actually commit to a full song.
It's not all about the high tech gear, necessarily.

Yea! Hard Drives! WHooohooo!
YeaH! Tascam 238s! WHooHoo!
Alrighty then, got that out of the way...
Picked up these two analog lovelies here in the TapeOp Buy/Sell/Trade.
They mate nicely (no offspring yet)
Excellent UK review of the Tascam 238S Here
(there's a 1 rack space patchbay out of frame under the 238 there)
Some yummy fresh tape too

uh, amen?
this thing does sound pretty flipping good for such tiny tape, and i don't even have the "S" model. yep, i am totally digging the limited format. just good fun, i'm not openign a studio with it as the centerpiece or anything!

238 and 488 put 8 tracks onto the cassette, 424 puts down 4.ipressrecord wrote:I've been toying with the idea of buying (re-purchasing, actually) a Tascam 424mkII. How does the 424 compare to the 238 or 488??? The 424mkII has dBx and sounds great, from what I remember. It's also built like a tank.
Jeff
isn't the 238"S" the version with Dobly S NR instead of dbx?
me no rikey dbx, not one rittre bit.
