Waves Q EQ vs R EQ

Post by chris ryan » Mon Feb 05, 2007 11:07 pm

i've got both, and i've always just used the REQ for some reason. i guess probably just because the display is wider, it's easier to sweep the frequency.
is the Q supposed to be better? more CPU taxing? i've been meaning to A-B them for awhile, and just haven't gotten around to it.

I think if you use from Q4 on up you get a wider display. I have both as well and pretty much just use the Q, for no real reason either.

I feel like the Q is a little more clean and possibly cold sounding, with the R being a little warmer. I currently prefer the Digi EQ III over both of them.

With the Q, you can dial in a very high Q (narrow frequency), great for surgical stuff. But I would agree that the Q sounds a little "cold" compared to the REQ. The REQ has a variable slope on the low and high pass filters, whereas I believe the Q's filters are fixed.

The REQ is undoubtedly warmer and more natural sounding, but according to my CPU meter it is a bit more taxing on my processor. Our of the two I use the REQ much more frequently because of the way it sounds.

I always used the Q, and I never complained....

Then I tried REQ. I use that all the time now. I find that it is punchier.

hey folks, thanks for the thread, i have both the Q and the Req, i always used the Q no reason other than it worked. i read this little thread and started using th Req. Last night it helped me get a priceless mandolin sound. i still use the Q once in a while the 10 bands can be handy. for example i use a 4033 cl quite a bit, its one of the nicer mic in my cabinet. i like the sound it gets on acoustic guitars, and many other instruments. it kind of lacks on vocals, so i went into my Q10, and created a 4033cl frequency response compensation. now it shines, its no neumann, but it works very well. thanks a lot,

I also have found that the REQ is for making music, whereas the Q is for fixing music.
