I guess this is what I was asking. I've been in a few studio's with drum risers and never really liked what the risers were doing to the sound of the kit. Also, many of them were hollow sounding and add that resonance which can be described as a boominess that really isn't that pleasing to the ear. 10 years of mostly recording on a concrete slab with a rug thrown over it probably has trained my ears to think one way though.
They mostly come at night..... Mostly.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I've only heard a few drum risers that I actually liked. Though rumor has it that Bruce Swedien uses a simple drum riser made of framed lumber, and he loves it.

What do I know, right?

:D

I'd consider building one, but only if I had very high ceilings. It's difficult to get much more decoupling that you get from a rug on a concrete slab.

Well, heck, if you dont like the sound of one dont buid one at all I say. Rug it is. Didnt Avalanch used to only use a rug, and didnt a lot of big names track drums there?

I want to have options, and there's enough room to lean the riser up against the wall if it's not wanted, or set up in the dead iso room, or in a different spot. I think we're gonna do a simple set of 2 pieces of 1/2" plywood with 2 3/4" over them (crossing the other way) to create an 8' x 8' riser, then put it on Platfoam. this makes it moveable, and if no one likes it we'll destroy the damn thing. I'll report back on this thread in a few months!

It helps the Kick stay out of everywhere, especially if youre recording a "live" kinda thingwith everyone in the room at the same time playing instruments without headphones. Woah. I just used two layers of chipboard with 2x4s and then insulated the underbelly. It made a huge difference and my lo end kick thingy got better because it wasnt sneaking into the control room anymore via the floor.

Larry,
How is the drum riser working out? Any problems?
Thanks!

Thinking about building a drum riser on 2x6's and u-boats with 1/2 plywood on top. Mostly so I can put a couple of nails in the wood to keep the kick in place.
Or maybe I should just lay a sheet of plywood on the concrete? Any thoughts from someone who has built a riser? Or how you keep a kick in place on cement?

This looks like the ideal solution.

Looks good, I wonder if I can nail into it? Has anyone used one of these before? Does the kit stay in place? Does it effect the sound?
