This is a valid point if the production has built in post-production timet to clean up the camera audio or do ADR. If not, the purpose of production isto get the whole enchilada.
THANK YOU!
Dang vidiots wanna take over everything.
We had a filmfest in Memphis, every single fim had audio so bad you couldn't get into it. They are all talkin bout audio now. Well, well, well. brewer's films were the exception. Most of it was botched in the recording, crappy capture, lame or nonexistent audio guy, but, plenty of booms and lavs.
Harumph!

It's always sad to see that. Seems to happen to a lot of first-time filmmakers and I think it has as much to do with the ignorance of the director and producer as it does with the skill of the sound recordist. And the fact that the boom operator often ends up being an afterthought, some wanna-be PA who gets 'stuck' with the job of boom-opping. And I think that there is a mentality that goes along with digital media that everything can be fixed in post; and since there is so little cost associated with shooting video, the attitude seems to be, 'shoot now, think later.'

I've shot a lot on both film and video, and don't have any snobbery for film... but I learned early on as a d.o.p. to be wary of working with filmmakers who have never learned the discipline of shooting on film... you just don't get to do good work. Directors and producers learn to have a lot more respect for d.o.p's and sound recordists when the stock is costing them $2000 a minute. And, when it comes to sound recordists, in my experience the best ones a) learned on a nagra and b) have experience in documentary or ENG, where there is no such thing as second takes or ADR, and you have to get everything right, right now.

Not with newscasters, when interviewing people walking down a sidewalk, spontaneous, no lavs, like the whitewater trial. Everybody talked out of their butt cheeks on that thing, it's all you could hear. Butt cheeks, butt cheeks, butt cheeks.

but you do have to admit one technique just wont sound "best" all of the time..maybe that is not what you had meant..and you meant try from under because it can work better than above sometimes..
