good minimum computer specs for recording?

Post by Jon Nolan » Thu Mar 08, 2007 8:56 am

basically, i'm looking to get a comp, and i searched for 'minimum computer specs' and a couple similar searches to no avail.

saw this for sale, and i need a comp:

PowerMac G4

Processor: dual 1.25 ghz
Memory: 3 x 512M and 1 x 256M of RAM
Hard drive: 1 x 80G and 1 x 160G
OS: Your choice (Panther or Tiger)

Extras: DVI/VGA Converter

$800

haven't tried to haggle yet or anything, but i'm interested.

i'd like to:

- run pro tools or DP on the comp
- be able to use a UAD card
- run a bunch of plug-ins with reasonable CPU headroom

A. is the above comp capable
B. if so, is it a decent price for the rig

if not (or even if so)

C. what are the reasonable minimum specs to run a set up like i'm talking about.

am i forgeting anything? i'm not terribly spec savvy, so forgive me if i blundered in my ignorance.

thx in advance...
Jon

ps - plz let me know if i've inadvertently asked one of those dumbass questions that won't get answered. i am an e-idiot :)

I'm currently running DP 5.1.1 on Tiger. I've had no issues with projects up to 45 tracks (nearly all having 2-4 plugins) and grouped busses. This has also included real-time sample replacement and Conductor based time augmentation. The computer I'm using is the following:

G5 Dual 1.8
900mhz frontside bus
1.5 G ram
160G + 250G 7200rpm HD's

Occasionally save times on these 15G and larger projects have been a little slow...but audio performance has been perfect.

I do think $800 may be a little high on the system you're looking at. For that dough, I'd look at a macmini or refurb G5 from smalldog. Hope this helps.
