If anything, it would make it impossible to destroy my ML19 with phantom power...

...but what kind of gain are we talking about here? Nicer gain than my pre?

It adds 20dB gain. I was thinking that it would be nice to have plugged in as a safety for my ribbons. I am mostly concerned about what it does to the sound if anything.

I just saw that gadget right before I looked at this topic... I'm curious about it myself. I've got a shinybox I'd like to get some more gain out of without having to spend more on a different pre..

I have mentioned this plug on several other threads. For $99, what's the risk??

(BTW it's on my short list to get for my ML52, after my current theater gigs are finished).

I'd rather use the $$ towards another GB stereo ribbon mic if it's not worth it.

They're made by Rode and are available as the add-on cylinder or as an internal modification for just about any dynamic mic. I saw both models listed at a couple of online stores, and while they didn't come up on the BSW page, I'm sure they can get them... and apparently we have a little red flag worth 10% off now.

Another possibility if you don't want gain but do want protection is to use an isolation transformer like the Sescom ISO-2 mic-level transformer. I have a few of these around for break ground loops between consoles and active DI boxes, and I have the line-level ones for knocking hum out of monitors, and other connections. Since they can't physically pass phantom power, they're a pretty safe bet while staying out of the way on sound quality and still allowing for preamp input impedence to effect the sound of the microphone.

Another option: use the makeup gain on a compressor to give you an extra boost.

E.g. if you have a RNP/RNC pair, patch the RNC into the RNP send/return, and use the Gain to boost to taste.

-I have global phantom power on my interface pres.

-When I use a mixture of condensers and dynamics the global phantom adds an annoying hum to the dynamics.

-I bought one of these hoping to solve the problem and get some extra gain out of my SM7.

-It's so noisy. Significantly more noisy than the hum the global phantom added.

-Live and learn. I bought a grace 101 and never looked back. For those still curious I'd sell mine for 50 bucks.

I wish someone would make something that you can plug into ribbon mics that would not allow phnatom power to pass to the mic for "just in case". It could be small enough to just leave it plugged into each ribbon mic all of the time.

I'd buy a few.
