Joel,

Beta 52 and a pair of Oktava 012. Then you can put your fatheads on the Toms. Will sound GREAT.

Hey johnmarkpainter,

If I thought I could get my hands on these without the headache of investigating their origin et al, I would probably go this direction. But as it is right now all the info I can find on these is doing nothing more than making my head spin.

First of all what's with the Chinese controversy? Second, where could one get a matched pair without all the capsules. The matched pair with the capsules is more than my budget will allow right now($600). Remember I only have $400. The 012's are terribly intriguing. I just feel like they have too much baggage attached for someone like me who doesn't have the time to disect the details. I wish I had more time and more money but I am where I am.

Can you give me more of your feelings about why you are more turned on by the Beta52 than the Audix D-6? The D-6 is definitely sinking its hooks into me.

alright.... so you cats may think i'm crazy but i think i've prepared myself well. i wanted to chime in on kick drum mics since i usually switch up the other mics depending on the player, the drums, the room etc.. but the one mic that i can't live without (drum roll......) is my samson QKick. i'm really not joking. i have used everything from neumanns to my D6 and i'm in love with the QKick. and i've posted a couple of tunes all recorded with the QKick on the kick drum.... the first two are of my band (i'm the drummer and played rhythm guitaron Yeah Yeah) and the second is of a band that i recently produced/engineered. two different styles of music but man i love that kick mic. anyway, check the tunes before you cats let loose, i think you'll dig it.

Hey guys, I don't mean to burst your bubble, but the MXL 990 is not a LDC. The capsule is the same size as the MXL 603s, 604, 991, etc. It's a 20mm capsule.

"But wait," I hear you say, "you can see the capsule if you hold it up to the light and it's bigger!" Yes, but that's not all the capsule. If you look closely, you'll see a large ring around a very small capsule that makes it look bigger.

It's the same 20mm capsule. And the electronics are exactly the same as well, they are just on a different sized board.

:D

Also, for those that say you can't use a MXL 603s on toms because it clips... the 603s have very high output levels... you just need to put a pad inline. Or use the 604, which has a built-in pad.

MSH microphones

For your budget and with what you already have, check http://www.naiant.com/ out. I've been using a pair of MSH 1s for overheads with great results. And now he's got the larger diaphram.

Wow! That is a remarkable price for a pair of overheads. Have you used these? Are they actually useful? At that price I feel like I can't go wrong. If they work at all I think I'd have to say they were at least worth what I paid for them. Crazy!?!

Yes, I use them. But don't listen to me, listen to Al & Mike at the PSN podcast #43 about them.

I thought the same thing, for less that $50 it was worth a shot. Meanwhile, I've got a lot of other gear on my lust list before upgrading these.

Also if you have time listen to the interview he did with PSN:

He seems like a stand up guy. If that kind of thing matters to you.

i have a set of those cheap omni's. . . they are great for the money, i'm not going to lie. i like use a mono one on acoustic guitar, it really sits in the mix well. and hell, for what, $50, how can you go wrong??

another metal guitar tip is to put a fan in front of you while you play, so it blows your stupid long hair around like the solo is BLOWING YOU AWAY because you're a fucking tool.

The D-6 is now going for $170 at BSW if anyone is interested.

I think I'll bite that hook myself.

I appreciate everyone giving their thoughts on this topic. It has been invaluable. I have decided to go with a couple more 57's, the D-6 and the matched pair of Fatheads. I may also get a couple Naiant MSH-2's for good measure. Since I already have an SM91, the MXL's(603, 991) I think I'll be in good shape overall. Already with the 91 one 57 and the MXL's I have a decent usable sound. I can't wait to get the FH's and the D-6. I think those will help round out the low end. I'll make some samples when I get it all setup and post here so you can all enjoy in the fruits of your labor.

Now if I could just figure out how to tune drums...
