How low have you sunk?

Post by ElMosca » Sat Mar 31, 2007 11:53 am

A recent thread about micing a cajon, where the "talent" asked the poster to "mic his taint", reminded me of an actual conversation I had yesterday with a prospect.

This local colorful character (very sweet guy, but always cooking outlandish ideas) approached me and tells me that for his next project, he wants to have the basic sounds be samples of his flatulence. Because half the time I don't know if he's serious or not, I went along with it, citing Bj?rk's Medulla (and he indeed confirmed that it was an influence), so I went for broke. I told him that I would track his "voice" for free if he got me a pair of microphones. I wrote down the model number of the Audio-Technica pair kit (AT2041) and told him not to pay more than $150.

I have yet to hear from him, but if this thing goes through, at least I'll get a nice pair of instrument mics. I may persuade him to let me tweak the sounds more, i.e. make NN-XT presets with looped samples for him, but in essence (heh?) this is how low I have sunk.:oops:

How about you? What is the most ludicrous project that you have said yes to?

Cheers,
++aldo

Could you ever use those microphones again?

I'm not sure, definitely not as vocal mics.

If he shows up, I will make a BIG pantyhose windscreen (ha!) for it and crank the pre so I can put some distance between the mic and the "instrument".

I was about to ask whether it may be better to sacrifice the LDC or the SDC (not in terms of sound, but rather in terms of which one I should keep), but I'm thinking: "nah, this guy has got to be kidding".

Anyway, back to work,

Check the extras part of the DVD "Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle", the audio guys went to great lengths for some particular authentic sounds...

I interned once at a Manhattan recording studio that will remain anonymous. They had just set up a new room for archival / transfer stuff, which they used to digitally remaster the entire Dischord catalog. My first time down there, one of the engineers puts on this tape that was literally half an hour of somebody taking the nastiest dump you can imagine.

Basically, I think more people have recorded ass sounds than we would like to admit.

We've used those same bunch of farts on a couple of live records, and a couple of other songs on studio records too. They were done on a blaster. I think we still have the tape somewhere. One of the ones on the song Enjoy had a ton of reverb added in the mix. That's our collective favorite. Sounds like an old style bike horn.

a friend and i were recording a perc. OD in the studio at school, which has a huge open reverberant room..... anyways, it was just a room mic, and i let one go. took like 20 minutes to record to chime hits because we were both laughing so fucking hard. it sounded HUGE in the headphones. then we went back in the CR and put it on loop playback. fun stuff @ 2 a.m.

Allbaldo, you have a good avatar.

Recording farts? wouldn't that sound like an Aerosmith album?
