Is that normal? I'm talking about the unit itself not in the audio path. I got one recently used and when it's on it sounds like the power transformer is humming, but it works perfectly and the hum isn't in the audio path... just wondering if that's normal or if it's broken.

I had a piece of gear that was humming s you stated. The power transformer had worked loose and was radiating the whole enclosure. Try tightening the power transformer bolts. It may help!...

well I sat it flat on my desk (one of those "Studio RTA" deals) and put a CD player and my audio interface on top of it and that made it not as loud. I guess dampening the vibration some... I'm glad it's not just me though and my HDS isn't about to burst into flames hehe...
