What is Elliott Smith using?

Post by saxrmc » Wed Apr 04, 2007 5:04 pm

Here is a link which has a video of Elliott Smith using a microphone for the recording of his album Either/ Or. If you have some time to kill, could you let me know what mic he's using? Thanks!

i wish i had more time around professional gear to be more certain about this.... but isnt that obviously a neumann, and likely a u67 with that thin profile?

yeah, actually i thought i read that he used a langevin, but then when i looked at a cr-2001, it looks nothing like the mic in that video.
it does however, look a lot like a langevin cr-3a:

but it could very well be a neumann (or one of the bazillion cosmetic copies)

I'd say it's a Neumann of some sort. It's important to note that this isn't an album session but rather a specific session setup for the Lucky Three documentary by Jem Cohen. Completely great.

You know, i heard if you use the mic he is using in that video, you will sound exactly like him.

On a side note, I've got some Oil of Snake that is really good for polishing your fretboard. It makes you play like Hendrix.

/sarcasm

It didn't matter what Elliot sang into, he would sound like himself through just about anything.

Transcend the gear.

Thank you thethingwithstuff. Anoying isn't it?. There always seems to be one like those in every posting. Anyway I just found out that it was for sure a Langevin CR-3A. Thanks for everyone that replied with useful comments! I appreciate it!

Yeah,

It's a crime to be curious.

The gear won't make you sound like blah blah blah. No shit. Everyone knows this. Did the guy say he wanted to sound like Elliott Smith?

When I see a mic and I don't know what it is, I like to know too. And it's fun to know what people who you like used to record with, not so you can buy the bloody same gear and do covers with it, it's just good to know.

Anyway, i think that kind of comment in response to a normal curious post is MORE annoying that the kind of nonsense it's trying to shoot down. I'm tired of reading it.

Not sure about that. I don't see the pad and roll off switches that would be on the back. Maybe you just can't see them from the grainy you-tube player.

Would you classify your non-answer post in the same category as mine? You are complaining just like I was. Who is more guilty, the complainer, or the complainer about the complainer?

You know what really sucks?

Is when the complainer of the complainee (me) get's complained about. THAT's the worst.

Sorry,

Yours truly,

Mr. Bandwidth Waster.
