Good Dynamic Mic for Vocals?

Post by rjm » Fri Apr 20, 2007 7:38 am

I've used an SM7b and SM-58 with varying results. What are your recommendations for a solid, vocal dynamic...sort of a proven, "across the board" mic? I've heard good things about the Heil and the Sennheiser MD-441, too.

Thanks.

Depends where you wanna go sonically too, what kind of music do you make and what kind of vocals are you gonna record (male, female, shitty vocalist  , good vocalist?)?

Honestly, you're already using one of THE most popular and proven vocal dynamic mics already in the SM7b. The 58a is a close second. I'm not sure what another would bring to your sound that eq'ing the first two couldn't accomplish...

+10 on the 441.

a GREAT vocal mic - very underated.

secret weapon snare mic. great on electric guitar/toms etc...

depending on the type of voice a RE20 is cool too.

I've used the Sennheiser 421 and 441 in a radio/voiceover application and they can be cool, not super exciting. An Electro Voice Re20 is always a good, creamy stand-by.

If you're looking for a new make from an established manufacturer that won't sting your pocket book, then the Electro Voice Cobalt CO9 is a great choice. Really good 's' without distortion and smooth frequency response in a cardioid pick-up pattern.

Same goes for the m88's little brother, the m69...but hell, the 421 rocks. I've read (FWIW) it's the only mic Nina Persson uses.

The Heil PR40 is awesome. It's got a similar range of uses as the 421 and SM7. One of my favorite mics!

I used an I5 the other day on a "screamo" band and thought it sounded great for that type of music.

+1 for the PR40. They will have to pry mine from my cold, dead hands.

We could also just chop your cold dead hands off and leave them attached to the mic. That would be awesome!

The M88 without EQ can also be awesome. That's a favorite of mine.

Definately. Sounds especially great on more soulful singers.
