That floppy bass sound used on hip hop records

Post by jckinnick » Wed May 02, 2007 1:34 pm

Any suggestions on how they are getting that floppy bass sound on songs like Wu Tangs "Can It Be All So Simple" and Lauryn Hills "Ex-Factor"? I would love to know if anybodys got any ideas.

Slowing down a bass sample has a cool effect as well.

Do you know the songs im talking about in the above post? It doesnt sound like a stand up bass it just sounds like a flop is the only way I can describe it. I would love to know how to achieve this sound.

interesting they almost sound like the exact same noise, i wouldn't be surprised if they were the same sample?

continuing to stab in the dark, it sounds to me like a noisily picked electric bass with whichever EQ/pickup setting gets you the most high end.

Sounds like the same sample to me too.

Especially since the Wu-Tang version is nowhere near the same key as the song.

Sounds like a sample of a picked electric bass to me as well.

A different song which has a great ripping bass tone, which I always assumed was some crafty Minimoog playing is "My Ever Changing Moods" by the Style Council (Paul Weller's post-Jam/pre-solo project)

Don't mean to derail this thread, but we are talkin' bout floppy bass tones, right? :) I think the synth bass in the Style Council tune sounds similar.

Yeah I was thinking they were both the same sample to. Do you think its tuned lower or anything to get that flop sound.

The main sample is from "The Way We Were/Try To Remember" by Gladys Knight & the Pips, and I think the bass is from "I Got The" by Labi Siffre which was also used by Dre for Eminem's "My Name Is" as well as a few other rap records.

That bass sound could be duplicated easily, muted and picked on an electric bass. Maybe a little overdrive? Holla.

maybe even a little envelope/wah effect. you could get that percussive "flop" somewhere along the way.

So I downloaded that Labi Siffre song and played it back with the Lauryn Hill song and it sounds a little different to me. Its like the Lauryn Hill sample is more exaggerated or something.
