Joel, that thing looks sick sick sick. Congrats.

I was searching for posts regarding mix buss comps and a post from a year or two popped up with you saying that you didn't compress across the mix anymore. (but had in the late 90s) But lately your posts indicate you are again. What brought about the change? Different gear (Zener, this beast)? your new board? Or just changing things around over time?
I think I have been in a cyclical love affair with gear and techniques for a long time.
Like doing parallell stuff by sending pre fader AUX's to a compressor, or a distortion pedal (metal zone) like in the early to mid 90's... along with a mix bus comp...
then deciding I had found a better way, then going back, then figuring more things out about mixing.... learning every time I mix means I may decide something is great or something isnt great... but then learn more and change my mind. Staying open to the moment is most important to me. If I ever think i am through learning I hope I am smart enough to quit....and work in sales or something.... ;)

The direct answer: My console now has a mix insert point that picks things off before the main outs. I like that spot for a 2mix comp.. rather than simply on the 2trk send AFTER the console's main outs. also, yes, having the zener and the 670 certainly changed my mind a little bit, though I have had "worthy" compressors in the rack for years, the zener kind of made me want to try it again, as did the 670.
just tapping the mix a little tiny bit with either the 670 or the zener fits what I want to be hearing these days, as I learn from everything I track or mix... we all do! tastes develop over time....

I just picked up a dbx 120 subharmonic synth for $26 off ebay.

I figure I'll get well over $26 of use out of it.

Just got a Soundelux U195 and a 70's AKG C-451E on the super cheap. I hadn't bought any new gear in a while, it felt super good. I can't wait to try out the u195 on outside of kick in fat mode.

I just picked up a Zoom 1201. Its great for those Massive Attack-esque long, spacey verbs. This guy has got some great samples of it here:

Only $25!

I used to have a 1201--they are cool!

I just scored a Beyer M201 for $119 from Music Go Round--it's in the mail. Can't wait to get it on the snare drum.

GREAT score on the m201. I love those mics for just about anything. I have used it on a number of vocalist who LOVED singing though it. It also works great on bass, guitar cabs and sometimes an acoustic guitar with character. Have fun with it.

Just got this guy - pretty much the best bass I've ever owned. P & J pickup config, switchable active and passive, and a killer fast neck with no buzz:

New - it's the Reggie Hamilton signature model. I actually was about to buy an American Precision, but picked this one up a few days ago and instantly knew it was "the one".
