I like 'em on amps.

Guild B302a Bass. Oh,Mama. Sounds like a big piano. Former owner (Rufus) musta put block letters where your right elbow would sit, since the letters are gone now,but you can still see RUFUS where the finish has faded.

OOH! 7th street entry used to have a couple. Used em on gtrs when i mixed/worked there . Helmet/Melvins double bill springs to mind. The earth shifted its axis!
Love my sm59/589's (on/off switch)-no proximity effect,no presence boost.

I was just listening to Helmet (Size Matters) the other day.
Slightly OT, one of the Helmet guitarists, Chris Traynor, is in Gavin Rossdale's bands, including Bush.
I have a 59, what's a 589?

SM59 is killer on guitar amps. Extra great at taming spiky single coils.Burnt Ernie wrote: ↑Mon Dec 21, 2020 11:47 amOOH! 7th street entry used to have a couple. Used em on gtrs when i mixed/worked there . Helmet/Melvins double bill springs to mind. The earth shifted its axis!

I have a D190 as well and have used it a few times on guitar but I haven't totally loved it. It's great in certain situations like twangy baritone leads but seems a little light in the low end. That said, mine underwent surgery and was hacked onto a pistol grip style body/mount (kind of like the old shure 545) by a previous owner. No telling if that changed the tone of the mic.

Same era and similar stylings as the 59 but with an on off switch. Not sure if it's exactly the same mic. Maybe a budget version?
Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Ah! That's the one I have - I reco' the switch with the cool lock. I think the 589s came first.

Just got a power supply for some old Mccurdy compressors. They are in excellent condition, my tech put meters on them as well. https://reverb.com/item/31920011-mccurd ... -pair-1980 aren't the ones I bought, but to give a visual.
I decided to precede them with a passive stereo transformer stage. I got it from an old friend. It was designed by Bryce at Highland Dynamics. All three of us use to be in the same building.
Anyway, the transformers allow to switch -6 db at 600 ohms and +6 db at 150 ohms. It adds color choices before it hits the Mccurdys.
I haven't posted here in like a decade i think.
I hope everyone is safe and sound. Maybe we stand less chance of catching anything as we hardly leave our studios.

I just unboxed a Mapex Cherry Bomb snare drum. It's very pretty and I'll be playing it later.

Do your compressors have that beautiful faux woodgrain finish? That's a look I could definitely use in my gear rack!drewbass wrote: ↑Tue Dec 22, 2020 9:49 amJust got a power supply for some old Mccurdy compressors. Ha, no, I took a second glance at that too.
It's good to know how cheap these things are. They are slow, deep and a mushy. I can only use them on certain things, even at that not often. Drum buss mainly.
Mine are racked horizontally and have these cool horizontal meters.

That looks like a Stuart Whitby build. He's brilliant tech here in Toronto and a bit of an expert on the old McCurdy gear. He built me a racked dual mic pre/line amp about 10 years back and did a ton of work on my PE2600. He's a genius.winky dinglehoffer wrote: ↑Tue Dec 22, 2020 4:46 pmDo your compressors have that beautiful faux woodgrain finish? Thanks! Good to know. If I’m ever back - Guelph or Toronto, I can contact him. Or. Buy gear here and have it sent to him

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Just ordered this little thing off eBay:
I've really been wanting to record fretless bass on a track, and thought about either buying a cheap full-size one (but I don't need another giant instrument taking up space) or de-fretting my current bass (but I didn't want to be stuck with that)... so here we are.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
just scored a UA 2108!! had one in my studio years ago, but left with a studio partner. bummed as it was discontinued and the rare instances they popped up on ebay, they were ridiculously expensive - I saw one go for $3k a few months back. when this one popped up for $1500, i didn't wanna wait. though if the audio scape copy is close enough, maybe i'll sell this one
