Realistic PZM for the win. I moved the piano from my dad's house into my new studio and wanted a grunt-level way of mic'ing it up. The piano is loud and bright and sits in a corner, but the PZM does a decent job of getting the good stuff and ignoring the rest. I've simply been placing it on the flat top of the piano. I've set the mic on the floor to get an impressive room sound from my drum kit as well. Haven't used a PZM in decades, but now I'm likely to look for a second one to make all my stereo dreams come true...

Weird old radio mic, shaped like an ice cream scoop and made mostly out of plastics. Very heavy duty switch inside, though. I got this a while back and only recently got around to cleaning it up and wiring in a working cable. Has a great telephone voice sound to it.

A pair of 6.5" woofers.

I have a set of passive crossover-less 2-way speakers I bought from Monoprice about 5 years ago that I love to use when recording to my DAW - like when laying down bass to prerecorded drums or doing guitar overdubs. They sound clear and loud, at 50w. a side ... I mute the current recording track in the DAW and listen to the amp and the DAW playback thru the Monoprice.

Then I blew out a woofer.

Replacing 'em I was more concerned about power rating and price than anything - speaker drivers can be expensive.

Anywhat, I got a pair for US$40, rubber surrounds, poly cones, from PartsExpress and I'm back in bidness.

Picked up a Zoom ZDM-1. It's a $50 dynamic "podcast" mic. I got it open-box for $25 (shipped, no tax -- Sweetwater Gear Exchange and it came directly from Sweetwater with candy and all...). I tried it quickly on voice. it sounds decent with the foam windscreen. needs a pop screen if you take it off. Also a bit shrill, so best to leave it on (and they want it to sort of look like a SM7B, even though it doesn't). Speaking of the SM7B, the ZDM-1 has a bit higher output, and with the foam filter you can get right up on it without pops.
Then I put it on a snare drum. It worked about as well as a 57 IMO. Raw sound was about the same. Didn't fart out or anything.
The body is cheap metal and has a lot of handling noise. The part of the mount that fits to the stand is plastic (although the ring attaching to the mic was metal).
Was probably worth $25, but not sure I'd pay $50. Maybe wait until they go on clearance.

Refurbished Windows 10 laptop - 14" screen, only a 260Gb SSD, and from 2018 or so. But only $160! I needed something to run system tuning software (specifically SMAART) and such, the old one was getting wonky.

This is a fantastic time to buy refurb computers, though - right on Amazon, lots of choices and great deals. I work at a small company and that's where all of our computers and show laptops are coming from.

When I first saw this photo it looked like a merged keyboard and MacBook. And also I’m just like, that would be such a cool hack, with like a little wide screen above the keyboard.
I actually saw someone’s pro hack like this on Craigslist several years ago, but it was a large keyboard with an integrated power Mac G5 or something.
