My prior last score was awesome, I love my drums. My latest one, embarrassing. I had a list of ebay item numbers, stuff I was checking out. Through a series of mixups (seriously, children, don't place ebay bids late at night after several days of excessively long shifts working and when you're severely deprived of sleep) I ended up bidding about twice too much on an Altec 1591 mic pre/comp. I briefly thought about just being a dick and not paying, but then I'd be the enemy, so I called it a life lesson and ponied up the cash. I still miss my money, but I'm happy to say the thing actually sounds really, really cool on acoustic guitar - I thought I was going to hate it given the bad rap the SS Altecs often get, and it's definitely not going to be making appearances all over the mix, but at this point I'm just happy it has at least one good use. As it's ancient, it needs a little work as it's clipping a touch too early, but when it's all cleaned up I sorta suspect it'll be a neat unit for electric guitars, too. The compressor is insane, seriously over the top really easily, but when only doing a few db has a neat effect on acoustic.

Cool New Stuff
Waiting for an SM7 to arrive.
Snagged a Larrivee solid body bass with ebony fretboard, EMG pickups and Schaller hardware at the pawn shop for $120 out the door 2 weeks ago.
3 weeks ago picked up a Roland Micro Cube for $40. Am interested to see how quiet it is when run on batteries, it is a nice sounding little amp anyway.

"There is never enough time to be in a hurry"
All that stuff was sold for PA and intercom use. Altec made top-shelf pro gear, but no one seems to acknowledge or know much about it. Only the common stuff using the plug-in octal lower quality tansformers/preamps gets bought and sold, and that is the Altec that lives in people's heads. Some people like it for the dirt factor, some don't. It gives Altec a bad name overall, and unjustly so. You gotta know where this stuff falls in the product line to know what you should expect out of it.weatherbox wrote: I thought I was going to hate it given the bad rap the SS Altecs often get
So anyway, I bought a custom Altec 9200A console from 1968 with (24) 9470A preamps and ( 8 ) 9061A EQ's. That series was custom order only, so there's almost no info available about it and most of them are long since trashed by people robbing the preamps from them. Originally very pricey top-shelf stuff that only went into recording studios and Hollywood film audio production units. I think the Rolling Stones Mobile for a while also. EQ's are the same as the Langevin 251's, and John Hall who designed the Langevin AM-16 considers his 9470A design to be an upgraded version from a few years later. I've used and loved those amps for a long time now, so really looking forward to having the total console experience. I'm pretty stoked here in vintage nerd-land.

A JBL Eon powered PA speaker, Crate Pro Sound stage wedge, Roland GR-20 Guitar Synth - - more live performance stuff than recording stuff, but that's what I've been buying lately.
Oh, yeah, a new 320 GB hard drive for my DAW is on its way to me also.
