Ha, I agree. those parts are so tiny it's really tough not to F-- them up. I killed one (trying to go too fast) and they are just not good candidates to unsolder and repair. Just had to buy another kit and start over.

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I've built around 8 or 10 of them. I botched one (hairball 990 clone, which is def. the most complex one I own) and ended up just buying a pre-built one because I couldn't even think about trying to troubleshoot and de-solder.digitaldrummer wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2020 7:47 amHa, I agree. those parts are so tiny it's really tough not to F-- them up. Beyond that one incident, I haven't found them too challenging as long as you move slow and double check everything. It's GREAT practice.
Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I got my first CAPI preamps. I got a pair of VP 26 and a pair 312 and I'm going to try them out recording drums. Curious how the Sonor kit will sound with different pres.
The kit has these mics:
K- Beta 52
Sn- SM 57
R1- 57
R2-57
Flr-421
OH L- 8040
OH R- 8040
Room- Warm 47
Should be fun!

Latest acquistion: a week and a half of my brother's help to build out a third of our garage into a little soundroom.
Internal dimensions: 11'2" L x 8'4" W x 9' H
About half done at this point. I have no illusions about this being soundproof enough for the like of drums late at night or cranked amps, more of just a clean well-lighted place to create undisturbed. It's a sanity thing, that and Joe Rogan podcasts.

A Radial Bassbone preamp, V1. Makes a huge difference in my bass tracks, better presence punch and top end clarity. https://images.reverb.com/image/upload/ ... 8k2sw8.jpg

A 1588B octal mic pre to plug into the back of my Altec 1612A Limiter. I'm not sure how much I'll end up using it, but it was cheap enough & takes up no additional rack space.

Ribbon to 1612 = killer drum room. Squash to taste. It's also a very cool vocal chain.winky dinglehoffer wrote: ↑Sun Jun 07, 2020 10:26 amA 1588B octal mic pre to plug into the back of my Altec 1612A Limiter. Mine is also set up with mic and line in. The mic side gets used way, way more.

I'll definitely play around with all this--thanks for the tips! Which preamp version do you have? I'm curious as to whether there's a whole lot of sonic difference between the various 1588s.A.David.MacKinnon wrote: ↑Sun Jun 07, 2020 12:18 pm

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I decided to go ahead and order a 1588C for the sake of comparison. I'll report back on any perceptible differences.
