I always used to do bass direct but now I got a nice amp, with a 1x15 cab. I figured toss a 57 on there just like with my smaller amps, or maybe the Heil PR40. Anybody have a secret bass cab weapon?

If I want to capture some string attack, I like my 4050, sometimes in figure 8 and more often in cardioid, pretty close to the speaker. I've also had good luck with a beyer m69 - it seems to roll off the low end right where I want it to for a dense rock mix.

I imagine your PR40 would rock on a bass cab. I've never used that mic, but of the mics I've used on bass cabs my favorite thus far is the EV RE20.

Lately, I've been using a Sennheiser e906 on a 15 in. cabinet. This is after trying a c414, a 421, a Beta52, SM57, and a whole raft of others too numerous to mention. I don't know why the others don't sound as good on this particular cabinet, but there you go. Usually I can just plop a 421 in front of a 15 in. and be done with it.
I'd just try everything you have, and if that doesn't work, borrow or rent some. It could get expensive if you start buying mics to see if they work in that application. Plus, if you spend a lot of money on a particular mic you might convince yourself that it works, just because you just dropped a lot of cash.
not to worry, just keep tracking....

I agree with the PR40. Of course, it depends on the cab and the sound you're after, but I've also liked the AT4047, AT4033, ATM25, AKG D12, AKG D1000E, Peavey 520i, and Shure SM7.

yeah man, your pr40 should be a worthwhile candidate. re20, 421, and cad e100 are used in some sort of combination with each other or individual with a DI (which usually gets reamped later). last recording, it was re20 on a 15", cad e100 on a 10", blended.

I will definitely be splitting the signal through the Sansamp, at least for now. (Or rather not NOW now, like in a month and a half when my studio's reassembled.) I am trying to get the whole setup mic'ed in my mind without buying any new mics....PR40 I think will be the first try. I love that mic, it's hard to imagine it sounding non-awesome.

I'm combining an ATM25 and a Pro37R a lot of the time, with good results.

BLUE Mouse, split to an Avalon U5.
