woah: lowender on kick!

Post by joel hamilton » Mon May 14, 2007 12:55 pm

Holy crap, the lowender really rules for kick drum!
Glad I figured that out. It is so much faster and more accurate than the "real" sub synth things I have available to me... And just for fun I threw the owender on a slightly anemic kick drum that i was going to do some other stuff with, including maybe running a trigger along side the original track... wow. I didnt need to with the lowender on the kick. It totally works SO well I was amazed. No need for EQ on the kick, just using the blend knob to get the beater/boom ratio right, and then send it through the compressor I always seem to use for kick anyway... totally huge, without any EQ at all! amazing.

If you havent tried the lowender yet, you are missing out.

Joel, so wh you say "real sub synth things" are you comparing to a Yamaha sub-kick or speaker wired as a mic, or another plug-in? just curious. thanks, Mike

No, I am talking about the DBX 120 or the Furman punch. Both classics for analog sub tricks... and they were both slower than the lowender, making them not the best for kick drum...

You might check out the Mr. Filterbank plugin by Michael Norris:

It's part of his free SoundMagic suite, and it also does a really nice sub for the kick too.

Sorry Windows folks -- but at least you guys have a good freeware convolution reverb!

sounds interesting.. although on that first sample it seemed like it went from sounding like a normal record to sounding like you're in the mens room at a jimmy buffet concert.

Hey joel,

I downloaded the lowender demo and I love it, my question is how do you use it correctly since so much of what it does is very , very low what techniques do you use to get the best out of what it does but not overload the bottom end?? thanks, Tom

With any sub synth tricks, the trick is to not just swamp the mix buss with the thing... it will eat headroom quick...

Just listen to how the lowender modifies whatever you have it on... I like to send it through the same compressor that the orginal sound is going through.. like on the kick, and then balance through that, so you get a very dense feel to the sound, without a TON more information swamping your low end...

There are a ton of ways to make this work, and it is totally subjective, but just remember this: even subtle use of something like this gives the illusion of "heft" to a given sound, even when the thing is not audible as its own element... meaning you shouldnt hear the lowender, you should just hear a bigger kick drum than what you had before...

Same thing with bass... this really depends on the mix though, because I will use a TON of sub synth on bass sometimes, and sometimes not, but with kick I am less renegade about it, for sure...
It sits better than EQ in the lowend for me anyway...
