Anyone else got Blue Balls out there???

Post by Mane1234 » Tue May 22, 2007 5:58 pm

I bought one when they first came out and now have three of them. I use them mostly for loud distorted rock guitar and I've always liked them. They have more clarity than most dynamics that I've tried but not as bright as using an LCD. I've not seen them mentioned much here so I was just wondering if anyone else uses them....
Of course I've had it in the ear before.....

i used one just a couple of months ago to record some clean Tele Custom coming out of an el-84 powered 1x12" combo amp.

i had to make it kiss the speaker grill before it sounded good, otherwise it was a friggin' mess.

after that i switched to a lightly abused 409 and never looked back.

I worked in a Pro Audio store for a while and A/B'd a Blue Ball and an sm58 on an acoustic guitar, each about a foot from the sound-hole. The 58 sounded like a nice condenser mic, perfectly suited to record acoustic instruments by comparison.

Blue makes some good mics however I don't recommend the ball series at all.

yeah, i have one and very rarely use it. sometimes on a guitar cab only if blended with another mic, sometimes on kick drum if i don't care what it sounds like...

I have one, and if I am ever reaching for the EQ to add some midrange in, I put the Blue Ball up in addition to, sometimes instead of what's currently being used. It certainly has its own sound. If you need some nice crunchy midrange to cut through, it's the ticket. If you pull back from the speaker by about 2 feet it is a bit more neutral-sounding. I feel it's easily worth the price if you already have a basic set of mics and you want to add some "color." Definitely not a "go-to" mic though.

a bit pricey for a "color" mic, imo.

Some people consider tube mics and ribbon mics "color" mics too. But yeah, $100 isn't like the $3.50 you would spend on a funky crystal mic or something like that. FWIW, I have found it to be worthwhile.

That question is a little personal isn't it?

Yeah, I had a couple for a while... My doctor told me to buy loose fit jeans, and the problem went away.
