What are those barrell things on USB/Firewire cables?

Post by stevebozz » Thu May 24, 2007 8:30 am

Quick geek question: I've always wondered what they were... fuses? Some products come with cables that have them on both ends, others none.. and they mostly seem to work interchangeably.

Is there any risk to using a cable without those things? thanks.

Ferrite chokes. They're a means of shielding the cable.

Definitely not wiretaps from Homeland Security.

Anyone know if these would help reduce computer noise from my Mbox?

FWIW, I had to wire one of these chokes into an ADAT sync cable back a couple of years ago because of a nasty hashing noise that was being transmitted down the cable between my HD24 and PC via an RME digiface.

I've always found that I need to build ground lifted balanced cables for any interconnect between a computer and audio equipment or this hashing noise shows up everywhere.

It was really just an experiment at the time, but it worked quite well. My first iteration was to build a ground lifted sync cable, which worked, but the RME unit would not boot with it plugged in. That's when I tried the choke and all was well.

Later I discovered that using a high quality PC power supply (antec in this case) solved that and many other problems I was having as well. So I don't even need to use the choked sync cable anymore, but all my audio connections are still ground lifted.
They mostly come at night..... Mostly.

Toroid Cores can be your friend

Post by radiationroom » Sat May 26, 2007 5:41 pm

Toroid cores can be your friend if you know how to use them. Not only do they work on keeping noise from being transmitted down the USB cable, they work wonderfully in keeping RF off of power cables and out of audio lines as well. The ARRL ham radio handbook has plenty of information how to use toroid cores for noise suppression in both digital as well as analog apps.
