I sometimes really like what happens when I time-align the bass DI track with the bass amp track. If you're going for "diffuse and puffy" then it might not be what you want, but if you're going for articulate, defined and strong then it works nicely!

Stupid and basic, but completely essential: STOP reaching for the fader as a first resort.

That's funny because that's totally the opposite lesson that I had to learn. :D

Which is:

"always reach for the fader as a first resort. Don't EQ or compress unless you have to."

Who was it that said "90% of mixing is getting the faders in the right place?"

that's an awfully personal question!

oh, the Wurli?

it's inside a building now instead of on the back porch of said building.

sorting out how we're gonna move it 25 miles to this shop where it will either undergo major surgery over the next few months or be parted out for projects and Wurli 4400-series organ spares.

how DOES one move a 450 pound musical instrument made of wood and glass and metal and rubber?

piano mover?

Sikorsky Sky Crane?

I can't pull together an amazing live mix in a venue I've never been to with a 10 minutes for soundcheck. I think I'll try to avoid getting called in to do FOH for an opening act in the future.

Coutesy of my friendly neighborhood TapeOp-ers:
Source w/ good transients + compressor w/ slow attack = very good*

*Assuming the source needs compression. :D
