Could this damage an AT4047?

Post by sheeptuf » Thu Jun 07, 2007 4:33 pm

So -

I heard about using an AT4047 on a kick from a thread somewhere - and WOW what a sound!

But - I am wondering,

Can this damage any part of the mic - or even wear it out?
This mic is primarily a vocal mic and I do not want to hurt it.

thanks a lot!

You'll have no problem. Sometimes you may need to use the input pad.

Good luck. Happy recording.

It's the bee's knees for kick drum. I usually have to engage the onboard pad, but that mic handles high SPLs like a fucking champ. I love the 4047. I've used it on every recording that I've done since I bought it in Jan of 2003.

pop filters are also a good idea for condensors inside a kick. they really disperse the air movement.

AT the
Conference Craig Shoemacher said the "Wavelab drum sound" almost always includes a 4047 outside the bass drum.

be carefull putting it "inside" the kick. Outside should be just fine. In the documentation for you mic it says the spl it can handle. test the inside of your drum.

you can put it inside.... fucking hell, it's not like high SPL is going to make the capsule melt. if it distorts (and it very well might), then move it out, but you only risk damaging the integrity of your audio, not damaging the mic. SPL ratings for dynamic and condensor mics are not a physical threshhold of damage, but rather an electronic threshold of distortion.

the 4047 is a GREAT microphone. I use it on kick drum (outside, or right on the hole) all the time.
