Neve 5316

Post by joel hamilton » Tue Jun 12, 2007 7:52 pm

Got home at 2am from tapeopcon, and at 9:30 am that same morning, we started installing my new Neve!

CRAZY.

All discrete. Fully custom TT patchbay, custom mahogany sides and top, uptown moving fader automation, 33 pre's, 41 channels at mix in a 33 input frame. Weird number.. 33...

Just thought I would share some install pics. It is crazy to rip out a console that you love for a different one that you love.... insane... the whole process is giving me even more gray hairs....

just a random update, complete with gear porn.

I will letcha know when we are done and have sexy pictures taken....

I bet it doesn't quite seem real yet, does it?! I'm stoked for you, Joel, for sure. Sometimes it seems like we've got our heads down all the time, plowing thru whatever work we get because of this crazy passion- it's great to look up ever so often and realize good things happen with hard work and dedication to an artform. Congratulations!

Beautiful! Congratulations! I don't think I could get used to that left handed producer's desk, but I'd fall in love with the rake on that thing in the first minute...
I thought this club was for musicians. Who let the drummer in here??

You must be so stoked to get that up and running. I know patience is required, but I would find it hard to come by, waiting to hear that thing!

Joel,

Can you share the expense/economics part? Including the work by Fred Hill? How'd you find this and what other consoles were in contention?

Thanks!

I was looking for an 8068, which I love a lot. After doing some stuff on the 5316 at Tiny Telephone in SF, I decided to look for one of those and save some money... also to get the broadcast size modules and get more channels in a smaller physical space.

did you want to know specific prices?

yep. the price for restoration/going through with a fine comb/cleaning/whatever is what i'm curious about, mostly. 50K for everything ??

Well, lets put it this way:

Right off the bat, there are 32 Neve 31114's in there, so look at vintage king or sonic circus and look at what they go for EACH, and multiply X32. that doesnt even take the routing modules, master section, 2 channels of 33314(the 33609 as a console module), frame, power supply, or uptown moving faders into consideration.

Then lets talk about the complete restoration, which included ultrasonic cleaning of every single module, every pot and knob, and lubrication of every pot and fader.
Re-capping the entire console. every module, master section, even the talkback ya know? everything. This also included calibration and testing of every single function.

THEN, there is the custom stuff I specified: replacing the military patchbays, built into the console, with TT bays custom made to fit the 17 inch console bays.
Along with ALL the outboard bays, to be custom fit into the console as well.
Each bay was $3k, and there are 6 of them. Thats a lot of money right there ALONE.

THEN delivery, a truck with a driver, and a tech for what turned out to be a three day install, of which I am on the last day right now. That includes EVERY function of the console being Re-calibrated after the move, and every single patch point.

The pre-wire guys were in here while we were at tapeopcon...

All told, it is a 6 figures purchase.

I love that sidecar. It is a 20 channel Neve 5402, with 2 class A, 70 db mic pres as well. We may hang on to it, but you should talk tony.

It is 10 stereo channels, which is pretty amazing if you had a 16 i/o DAW type situation, because you would use 8 stereo faders for summing, and you would have two more stereo faders, and 2 mono faders for returning outboard stuff like verbs or parallell comps! The thing is totally great.

We might be selling it. There is a picture of a 5402 just like ours on the aurora site...

Talk to tony about it man, it would be a KILLER setup for you!

Oooh -- that is surely tempting.

But I'm probably better off saving the dough to mix on the big dog.

That said, if you become serious about unloading it, at least give me a shout.

Last time I was close to a Neve was the 80xx at Trout.

When's the first session on it?

PS: Thanks for the heads up, Tony.
