Fav Song & Production Vs. Worst Song & Production

Post by akg414 » Tue Jun 19, 2007 5:59 pm

Today's music is really not what it used to be. Song writing seems to be centered around complaining, or money-making vapid formula crap! Add to that, the lack of dynamics, over produced, auto-tuned, grid-aligned, sonically "perfect" etc...

That being said....

1. What is your favorite SONG of the 2000's ?
2. What is your favorite production example of the 2000's ?
3. What is your least favorite SONG of the 2000's ?
4. What is your least favorite production example of the 2000's ?

My answers (opinions)

1. In The Waiting Line (Zero-7)
2. Come Away With Me (Norah Jones) - clean, real, tape 8)
3. Anything from Staind
4. Any Nickleback album (you get tired after 3 songs)

the worst song probably has the best production and the best song probably has the worst production. but then again the best song might have the best production and the worst song might have the worst production.

I really like the ep that newport worked on, Deloused was great (song writingwise and production wise) Frances was pretty great too. I was a bit less impressed with the songwriting on the latest record, but it may be my favorite production wise.

they've got some great tunes, but somehow everything just sounds so... shrill? maybe it's just that my ATDI stuff is on played-in vinyl while Deloused and Frances are on c.d.
every time i listen to any of it, though, i end up writing a 15 minute epic that no one else is vaguely interested in working on, until i break it up into 15 one minute songs and walla, quick e.p.
Village Idiot.

1. Off hand, I'd got with Matthew Sweet's "I Love You."
2. See above. It's a beautifully trashy production, and while not a clean or pristine sound, fits the song perfectly. That's what counts, right?
3. Probably anything by Toby Keith. Especially that "Angry American" hocus.
4. That Nickelback/Kid Rock cover of "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." Piece. Of. Shit.

1. "The Pretender" by Dr. Dog from Easy Beat. So much about this band signifies everything that's still good about music.

2. Ben Kwellers record, the one that Ethan Johns did. I can't remember the name of it. Totally straight forward gtrs 1 & 2 panned L and R and everything played mostly live. In that same vein as Nora Jones but from a rock standpoint maybe.

3. Anything by coldplay.

4. Modest Mouse Good News For People Who Love Bad News this one is personal for me (all my best to jaquire, i interned for him and he gave me some great advice) but this is a band that has made some great records and the production sounded too protooled to me. Maybe not the worst recording but one that disappointed me. Hell the new one sounds even worse.
