Naiant mics...?

Post by qball » Thu Jun 21, 2007 8:06 pm

Here are some incredibly inexpensive mics that people have been talking up at another forum. After reading the raves of several owners of these, and hearing some sound samples of them in use, I decided to gram a MSH-1 for myself to try out. The price is insanely low and they all have a 7-day trial period...how can anybody go wrong?

Have any of you tried these? What's your favorite application for each model?

yeah they're nice cheap condensers. i have a matched pair of omnis (the older msh-1o model) and a msh-1k.
the design is an improved version of a design originally published in tapeop i believe.

I have the omni, cardioid and the way dirty version of the Orange Crush.

The omni I use as a room mic often. I tested it as an OH and it beat out the cheap Behringer omni, but lost the shootout against my KM84's. No big surprise there, but man it was quite useable. Surprisingly usable.

The cardioid (drum/instrument version) distorded way to quickly when I placed it on snare. maybe to much spl? Never used it since. For 8 bucks or whatever, it can wait till I think of another place to try it out...

The Orange Crush was way cool up against a 4x12 Marshal, distorted mid-rangey all to hell; great "effect" mic to blend in. The guitarist said it sounded like some shitty $5 Radio Shack mic.... I said, YES thats why I like it!!
I want to try it on vocals, parallel to my usual signal chain.
It's one of those "fun" odd sounding mics.
And bloody hell, you'd never loose that little thing in a mic locker.
Talk about O R AN G E!

The cheap omni is a very good value, maybe a little thin sounding but you cant go wrong at that price.

The naiant mics are awesome and an absolute steal at that price or more. I have the msh-1's and msh-2's and love them, use them on every gig (and on drums for live sound in my wedding band as well- just 2 naiants and a kick mic).

I got the orange crush...didn't work...sent it back..got a refund..
had to pay shipping both ways..not so much as a "sorry I sent you an untested piece of shit"
I could have got a pair of those Karma mics for what I blew on shipping for that thing.
oh well...?

Harry.

EDIT: I just got two free Niant mics in the mail?? I guess the guy read this post and wanted to make sure I was a happy customer?? pretty cool of him.. ((now I feel like a dick:(
I haven't used them, so I can't comment on the quality, but he must be a pretty stand up guy anyway.

Looks like they put some of those small capsules (like ppl use to make the TapeOp omnis with) and stuck them in the end of an XLR connector.

Lots of manufactures make this type of condensor element. Panasonic has a range of them.

This should be a pretty easy DIY, not sure how good those could sound? Or have we all been fooled into believing that we need 1" condensors??

$44 for matched omnis is pretty tempting...

I bought a pair of the omnis last year, and have really liked them. I've had good results with them on acoustic guitars, drums, and some electric guitars and percussion.

These are not versatile mics- or rather, these are not 'critical' mics, but are okay, sorta trashy sounding omni's. Fun for the mic locker, but not essential and not universal.

depends on your budget and your sensibilities.

no mic exists that is the right choice 100% of the time.
