Keying a gate in Cubase?

Post by glagola1 » Tue Jun 26, 2007 11:50 am

Does anybody know how to key or sidechain an FX channel in Cubase SL? I want to key an expander on a drum room track from my snare track to get a big 'ole snare sound.

Thanks DWLB! I've edited the post to be more accurate.

You either want a gate or an expander on the room mic, externally keyed to the snare track.

Kick ass. Now all I need is that plug in that allows key-ins and perhaps a better version of Cubase besides SL 2.0 :)

Yeah, a compressor with keying is "key" (har har) but I personally don't fully understand why it has to be a quad bus, rather than a regular stereo bus.

Ok, so it looks like you can do it in version of Cubase that do not have the Quad bus.

Awesome. I've downloaded that plugin and I'm looking forward to trying it out. I've never ducked or keyed before and this seems like a really good tool for uncluttering a mix.

Thanks!!

AWESOME!!!!!! I've been half-assedly trying to figure this out for a long time, and I pretty much gave up. I've never really done keying/sidechaining before, this should be very fun. Thanks so much!

well I'm having a little trouble here with it still; it seems as though I'm just sending the bass and kick into a group with Waves C1 SC comp and unless I do hard panning and doing the chain in "L>R" mode there doesn't seem to be a sidechain relationship going on...

what Waves comps can I use with this method? any? Or any of the stock Cubase comps? Or a free one I can find (PC)? Or I'm still missing something with the actual technique...?

I think you need a compressor plug that has a "keying" feature, like Voxengo's Crunchessor (very inexpensive and very good!)
