Alesis hd 24 transfer to hard disc for Protools
Got a client with an hd 24 project and he needs to transfer it to hard drive and send me the drive
so I can mix it in protools

I'm wonder what special instructions I need to tell him.

thanks

Fireport...

Post by UXB » Thu Jun 28, 2007 6:55 pm

This is very easy, if he has a fireport. The fireport in conjunction with the free software will allow him to take the files from the HD24 drive, and put them as AIFF's on the computer. It's pretty easy to do, if you have one.

Best,
H

even w/o the fireport he should be able to do this. a while back i did a project on one sorta reverse - DAW files from computer moved to the HD24 for mix.

go to the alesis site and DL the manual. basically, you can hook it to your computer via ethernet and set up a local network connection via TCP/IP btw the computer and HD24. then it's just a matter of ftp'ing files from one place to another. it's pretty easy and i was able to do with the help of the manual and at home in an evening.

Just be aware that the TCP/IP transfer can take FOREVER. The fireport is the best option. If time is a factor, there's no reason why you can't hook the HD24 up to ProTools and do a play and record deal. If you're using Pro Tools LE then you will have to use MMC to synchronize the start times for playback and record and bring eight tracks in each pass.

Or you could bring eight track in per pass and synch it up manually. Personally, I'd just drop the $180 on the fireport (actually, I DID :).

Another way is to use the ADAT optical I/O to transfer in real time. Don't forget to properly set up the word clock.

i am assuming you know that the HD24 writes the data in it's own proprietary way so it's not like you can hook it up like a regular external drive and expect to read it.

i use the optical to run tracks into nuendo - works great. clocked to my RME soundcard.

With the fireport software you can export the files off the drive in whatever format you wish. I generally export them to my PC as BWF files, rename them according to my input sheet, and import them into PT for editing/mixing.

It's a nice system actually. I was a bit hesitant to buy anything made by Alesis after my experience with the 20-bit ADAT machines, but so far I have been quite happy with my HD24.

2 cents.
It's a piece of cake. Fireport OR other IDE to firewire connector and ADAT FST software. Like 1 minute per song of 24 tracks 24bit @ 48khz.
If you do the Ethernet just make sure your filefetcher can resume downloads automatically and is not a pain about it. bout 20 minutes per song.
I havent used the MMC part but it's pretty simple.
I've had mine going for years, Ive burned up three or four fireports.
GET THE FIREPORT AND ADAT FST SOFTWARE. The other way SUCKS!

Doing it the ethernet way DOES take forever. But if you're going to do it that way, you need an ethernet crossover cable, not a regular ethernet cable.

Thank you for posting this!!

I'm about to order my third fireport after my second one died (to be fair, I think some shampoo was involved, don't ask), and now I feel better not being the only one with bad luck fireport attrition.

Unless you want to mix right from the ADAT HD24, fireport is definitely they way to go. Is there a place you're getting them cheaper than $199, Brian?

I wish I could remeber the link, but, I'm sure it was a google search result for Firewire to IDE and it was some generic thing that was about $6.95
I got my firelinks replaced under warranty.

Does the generic 1394/IDE interface work with the FST software?

I'm only guessing that it would, but, for 6 bucks, it's a cheap bet.

I tried to use the ethernet crossover cable but couldn't get it to work. I had tech support back and forth for weeks and they coudn't help. I was thinking I am forced to buy the fire port, but at $199, now I'm worried that it will blow up.
