Help with picking a transparent guitar Overdrive pedal!

Post by Michael.E » Thu Jul 19, 2007 5:40 pm

Looking a clean boost overdrive pedal, and need some advice.
Want something that imparts min. distortion and still beefs up my tone.
Again, more to colorize clean signals and some breakup at higher levels.
Also something that would be good used in front of another OD pedal
(Vintage RAT, OCD, Hotcake, Fulldrive2 , etc.)
Similar to the effect of pushing the gain on my tube amp, but without
blowing my ears off or killing my tubes.

My first instinct is something like the KLON CENTAUR Overdrive, which is pretty
subtle sounding but very clean. However Klon goes $400 and up on ebay
not sure if I can justify paying that much for a stompbox unless it's completely
unique and original, but then again so many boutique & BYOC clones out now
why no alternatiives?

Is this thing seriously even worth it's weignt in gold or fall short?
Plus any alternatives that are better or cheaper, yet similar sounding?

Guitar(s): Fender Jazzmaster (Re-issue/American) + Fender Jaguar
Amp(s): 1968' Fender Super-Reverb (Silverface)

Why don't you go on a Clean Boost Safari!.

Somewhat cursory descriptions, but it should get you in the ballpark. You could also look into building a Klon clone.

Sounds like what you want is a nice boost pedal - can't go wrong with a ZVex SHO. For some grit and boost, I like the Liquid Sunshine pedal from Subdecay. With those two pedals and a small tube amp, you've got a near infinite amount of tones at your disposal.

+1 for the Zvex SHO. I have their Box of Rock, which is the SHO boost combined with a distortion section. Super flexible (but not cheap).

I'm kind of looking for a really transparent "mid-hump" type booster, I guess sort of a cliche' by now, but similar to vintage TS-808 --- but not a typical replica..

I don't know, something similar to the KLON i guess :)

Man, you seriously owe it to yourself to try the Liquid Sunshine out if you're looking for something like that. I usually run mine hot, so it acts more like a traditional overdrive pedal, but you can set it up so it's more transparent. Used, it costs about 1/4th of a klon.

i have a DOD FX-10 Bi-Fet Preamp pedal, whose main selling points were using FET circuitry, and having cost me approx. $25 total.

Hmm...what do we have here?

Have you considered that Range-Master clone?

Wow- you managed to contradict yourself 3, 4, maybe 5 times in the same sentence!

A few other pedal makers to consider:

http://barberelectronics.com I like the Barber LTD
http://menatone.com I'm really liking the Red Snapper
http://voodoolab.com SparkleDrive- a 808 overdrive with a blended clean boost.

But you know you really want the Klon- just save up for it and get it.
