Ditto, and thanks for the tip about how an old sock can make a SM57 sound like a vintage U47. I used it on some vocals today and it was amazing.
It may be a garage, but it doesn't sound like one.

HA! That's awesome! Great to see some ingenuity.

So, what do you do with the sock, exactly? Stuff it full of quarters and beat yourself senseless with it?

Kidding!

Seriously, though. Do you just stick the sock over the mic, or what?

Thanks,
Andy

You have to make sure it is dirty, old, and one of Joel's, and then you just pull it over the SM57 and place it like you normally would. They also have Studio G Strings to tie around the sock to hold it on.
It may be a garage, but it doesn't sound like one.

OK...is this a joke? Or a mic trick that you guys have actually used? I've certainly heard of stranger things.

Either, way... :D

the old sock- basically the theory is that a heavy sock, usually wool, cuts high frequencies. and as we all know, that's what's good about tape. check it out and see for yourself. obviously, the source has to be loud enough. so try it on a guitar amp.
