Best 4 Track Type II Tape

What is the best modern tapes that I can buy for multitrack recording? My Tascam Porta Two manual say that High Bias type II tapes (of whice I've tried Fuji 90 and Maxell XLII 110)

I know that I shouldn't use anything longer than 60 mins, so I plan on getting the 60 min tape now, I just wonder if one tape is better than another.

TDK SA series has worked best for me; SA, SA-X or TDK Professional 60 minute tapes.

I prefer the Maxell XLII 60 minute tapes for my 424 Mk. II but have had great success with the TDK SM stuff as well.

If you get SM-20 you get about 5 minutes of recording time one-way on the faster speed; it's about the right length for one song. In my experience one song per cassette is all I really want, although a longer tape would leave room for multiple takes.

I want it for recording jams, so i guess 30 mins will have to do.

TDK cassettes have always been unreliable for me and i won't use them.

Maxell XL-II series are probably the best if they can be found.

any cassette over 90 minutes will be unreliable.

I always used Maxell XLII....I have some from the early 90's that are still in great shape...TDK worked pretty well too...

In my experience, the XLII sounds better- more "tape" with better lows, smoother highs, etc. And for whatever reason, I like the plain jane XLII- I hate the XLIIS- it almost sounds like fake plastic to me.

However, TDK SA and SM series seem to hold up better after repeated passes (i.e. doesn't degrade).

Our local used record store chain (Cheapos) have been carrying XLII forever, so I think my cassette supply chain is still working....

(For the record, I've used both a Tascam 238s and a Tascam Porta 01).

Hi all, first post:

Has anybody used 'QUANTEGY C-60 HIGH BIAS (Type II Chrome) AUDIO CASSETTE' in the past? I was looking through the UK suppliers for the cassette types mentioned earlier in this thread and didn't have much luck. Found a site with a range of Quantegy tapes though...anybody care to offer their 2c worth?

If you can still get the Quantegy cassettes - get some!
I used to use them for 'masters' (!) when a poor youngster in the 80's/90's - and I recently transfered some old recordings to computer. I was amazed at how good they sounded.
To be fair negatives may be a bit of brittleness at the top - rather than the smear you normally get - and they would probably not appeal to the hi-fi brigade - but you can apply heavy dolby and still have an appealing treble end. Not that I ever did!

I'll buy some if i can find some.

Maxell XLII are the best I've found that are affordable and fairly easy to find.
