I like the saturator in PSP MixPack. I've also recently taken to sending a couple of channels to an actual tape machine and back, which is amazingly fun.

I've never found anything close with vst plugins, though there are tons of plugins that do distortion in one form or another. Voxengo makes a tape buss plugin that does some wierd, sometimes cool, stuff.

I keep hearing amazing things about Airwindows Iron Oxide. Like amazing things, and it's only $60. No demo, though there are a ton of free examples of Airwindow's work in the form of additional plug-ins at the bottom of the page. Great attitude regarding copy protection, etc.

If any of you drop $60 on this plug-in (or any of them) please report back.

I'd be really interested in hearing about Iron Oxide as well; I still have much better results dumping my stereo mix to tape than I have with any vst plugins I've tried, though I am a bit of a retro-grouch.

Well since I never engineered anything recorded to tape (only recorded to tape as a band) I couldn't tell you what a plug in tape emulator SHOULD sound like. But the PSP Vintage Warmer sounds exactly like I THINK tape should sound like. . .thats a great plug in and super versatile.

i'm a little dubious about the vintage warmer myself, but hey...

the saturation on the blockfish works in a pinch.

i'm curious about that iron oxide plug as well...chris the airwindows guy is like the archetype crazy genius and the nicest guy on the internet....

Do you think anyone ever asked for a "digital emulator" in the 80's?

No, i think most of them were begging for affordable digital. No more hiss, wow, or flutter, and a flat frequency response? Woohooo!

Can anyone recommend a vst saturator plugin that does a good job of de-brittlefying (I have the copyright on that word) high frequencies? I think that's the main thing I like about tape over plugs, the highs seem to saturate in such a pleasant way. I've tried demos of Vintagewarmer and Voxengo Tapebus but neither one did much for me.
