affordable Multi-band Compressor plug?

Post by logancircle » Fri Aug 31, 2007 12:51 pm

Anyone know of one? Every once in a blue moon (light right now) I want one for something specific and PTLE don't come with none. There's gotta be something cheap and basic out there, no? HEEEEEEEEEEELP MEEEEEEEEE! Ahem...

I love multiband compression - I actually prefer to think of it as dynamic equalization. One interesting example of its advantages over simple eq is that the effect has an attack time.

My experience is with the Wave Arts mb comp, and those that come bundled with Samplitude and Sonar.

I really like the Wave Arts, but I let the demo expire because I am satisfied with both the Sonar (it's actually from Sonitus, which I guess folded and sold to Cakewalk, maybe?) and Samplitude multibands. The Sonitus mb comp has what I consider essential, individual input level meters (keyed to the threshold controls for precise setting) and gain reduction/expansion for each band.

Anyway I don't know if there's an RTAS version or if you have a wrapper, but check out the Wave Arts. It has a great interface and in my memory a better sound than the others.

If you run VSTs you can get the Cakewalk Sonitus:fx Multiband Compressor for $79. I use it quite a bit and I'm happy with it. However, I don't have any experience with other multiband compressors.

Check out the multi-band compressor, ReaComp, that comes with REAPER (I think you can download their free VST's separately from the whole program if you want).

It's not visually flashy, actually very simple, but powerful.

BTW - a beta version for Reaper 2.0 is now out at the Cockos site. So cool I finally broke down and coughed up the money for the license.

another vote for Wave Arts. All those plugs in that bundle are great.
I find adherence to fantasy troubling and unreasonable.

I checked these plugs out, but I don't consider $200 for one MBC plugin cheap. Anyone know of something less than $50?

in that case maybe you should just copy the track and use hi/low pass filters to divide it up and then compress them differently - then you don't even have to use the same compressor on each band. If you have a halfway decent filter it could sound just as good as an all-in-one mb comp.

it seems like most of the good deals on plugins I see are for VSTs - maybe using that 50 bucks towards buying a VST to RTAS wrapper would be the ticket.

You're right, I don't know why I keep putting that off. I think I'm actually afraid that if I get a wrapper I'll have too many choices, and may get bogged down. That's a really stupid reason not to get one, though. Does using a wrapper add latency or tax your processor more?

Ozone is $200 and has much more than just multiband compression.

I already use Ozone, but it's quite a CPU hog. I remember Digital Performer having a decent one built-in. I sure darn wish ProTools had one, is all I'm sayin.

+1 Sonitus:fx suite.

My fav Multiband comp.

The standard comp is pretty cool as well. And the gate, and the reverb....
