Just how rugged is the ribbon on an m160?

I see in the manual that I downloaded that one of the suggested applications is "Snare."

Can this thing really handle the SPLs and transients of being a snare spot mic without stressing the ribbon? :?: :?: :?:

Well, I've never pointed one straight at a snare head head, but I'd imagine it can handle it.

I've them quite regularly on snare shell, overheads, as well as as on screaming cabs that have been easily as loud as any black beauty.

If they can survive as John Bonham's overheads or room mics, I say they can handle your puny drummer's snare :!:

my friend had an m130 toasted by 30 seconds of shitty slap bass.

explain that.

those mic's seem to be much more sensitive to air pressure than spl's. i use an m160 regularly on (very) loud guitar amps, and both that and an m130 on drums. loud one's sometimes.

i'm pretty fearless with mine. so far so good. don't mic a sound hole on a kick, and i don't put mine very close to loud amps. at least a foot away...

no.

i used an m160 on snare this weekend. aimed at the shell not the top head, maybe 4'' back? i wouldn't use it on a basher, but i was playing pretty quietly...sounds cool, totally different from the at4040 i usually use.

like dwelle i use it front of stupidly loud amps all the time and it's fine.

The thing is, on a guitar amp or whatever, you'll hear the ribbon start to distort usually before it breaks, so you get a warning. A loud snare drum would be pretty dangerous, me thinks, as one sudden blast of air and you're toast.

These are itty bitty mics too--I'd imagine the ribbon is much less prone to flapping wildly about than other ribbons.

I have had no issues with guitar cab but have never tried snare. I did use it on toms a few times!
