your first multitrack

Post by fremitus » Mon Sep 10, 2007 9:10 pm

inspired by the recent posts with so much love for the tascam 238 i am...

lets limit this to a four track or better, unless your fekkin' old, in which case i would love to see your first stereo recorder.

myself, i'm not THAT old, so my first multi was the super hot action fostex x-28H. i still have a bunch of cassettes from it that i haven't listened to in years, but i think i ought to. pretty sure that one of the guys i played music with on saturday night has it in his basement and his kid will be using it soon. so it's around, somewhere...

my favorite memory of it is using a set of keys to emulate a tambourine on many a track and the sound the transport makes when it engages into play or record. a fair delay from the pressing of the button mind you for that sound to actually occur.

My first deck:

7" reels. I had to save for quite a while to get it too. :D

Was stolen in 1980 from our rehearsal space. Fuckers.

This was mine... Man, does this bring back memories...

It was noisy, a little odd, but I didn't know any better... Wrote a lot of freakin songs on that...

One day it just died, so I threw it away... It was probably a busted belt, that I could've replaced if I'd known better...

Mine was kind of like this, but it was beige, and a fostex. It was beige body, with blue and green knobs, with of course the red mic pre knobs. It did have VU's, though, no led's... I had it from around...God I dont even know what year that was at this point. Before that I had a TUBE 2 track reel to reel! I rocked that thing. That was way back as well.. Like 1979 or '80! woah!

Does it count when you're in ninth grade and you keep bouncing mono "mixes" between two home stereo tape decks while playing/singing into the other mono track? That was my first version of multitracking.

Later I stepped things up to the original Porta 2. That thing came around everywhere with me. It even almost sort of sounded okay. My friends fried it one day by plugging in the wrong power source.

tascam porta one then a porta four (?) i believe. it was kind of a step down as i recall, but the porta one wasn't working well and i had to contort the ac adapter cord in all different directions to get it to work. masking tape was involved. i suppose i could have gotten a new ac adapter, but i was 15 and i suppose it didn't really occur to me

Masking tape: the pre-teen version of duct tape, which is itself the high school/college version of gaffer's tape, which is the young adult version of throw money at the problem. Hm.

Porta One for me. I was working lights for a theater show, befriended the tech director, and he sold it to me.

I still have the Porta One. I just sold my second (Tascam 238s) to Tatertot.

When I was really young, like 5 yrs old and stuff, something like this was the coolest:
Image

I have nothing that I recorded back then anymore, which is really sad.

Then this thing in the 1990s:
Image

I would record at home and fly those tracks into ADAT or 1" tape at the school studio, add to it, and mix on a Tascam 24 channel board. I remember one time when I accidentally spilt a full glass of water on the 424 and didn't turn it on for 1 month. It survived. Sold it in 1999 after having my Roland VS880EX for a year and not using the Tascam. I definitely miss it.

I have a friend who unfortunately broke his hip in a car accident this summer. sucks. However, he has been in bed recording a record with his Tascam 414. I'm going to fly that stuff into Digital Performer and mix for him. Can't wait to hi-fi that lo-fi.

Jeff
I record, mix, and master in my Philly-based home studio, the Spacement. https://linktr.ee/ipressrecord

Auto stop? WOW sweeet.

I keep meaning to start a thread where we showcase our ancient recordings from junior high or earlier. One of these days.
