JUMP (in pitch)

Post by ??????? » Sun Oct 14, 2007 10:19 pm

So what happens when you?re Van Halen, the last song in your set list is the million-seller ?Jump? with its synthesizer-keyboard opening?and the recording you?re using to play back the synth is accidentally run at 48K instead of 44.1K?

I agree with the diagnosis with respect to pitch, but the speed would be much higher as well (I just did a test on ProTools to check this). Perhaps Ed's guitar is just out of tune.

that tempo did seem a bit bright for that tune. If my calculations are correct, the tempo would be something like 8% faster.

If the original tempo were 120 BPM, the new tempo would be something like 129 BPM or 130 BPM. Seems about like the tempo discrepancy I perceived, anyway.

Actually, I just now dorked out and tested with a metronome. :D

The video has the tune playing at a spot somewhere in between 129 and 130 BPM, which is right where it would land with this mistake if the original tempo was the ever-common 120 BPM. So I bet the guy's assessment is dead-on. :D

Dorked out even further: Just checked the original studio recording, it's at approx. 129 bpm. Same file played back at 48kHz lands somewhere around 140, so the concert video is at the original song's tempo. So I maintain my objection to the 48k idea.

though his pitch math does work out, at least from his post... the original is in concert C, the 48k version ends up between C# and D. Oddly, the keyboards in the video are pretty much dead-on to C#.

Though keep in mind Ed and Mike used to tune down at least a half-step to accommodate Dave's limited vocal range, it's possible Eddie was simply handed the wrong guitar!

What a nightmare.

I can hear Alex Matson quietly muttering "This is Bullshit!"

It's funny, a lot of the audience didn't seem to notice.

It's weird that this mistake caused that SM58 to appear fifty times larger than normal.

Holy shit! The singer doing that fucking routine with the staff and bouncing on the giant sm58 was fucking hilarious!

I like that version of jump better.
