Singer sticks head into metal bowling locker with SM57 in back corner.
PVC pipes, PVC pipes, PVC pipes. Used one just last night for some sound-designy shit.
Old or damaged mics with odd frequency responses.
Plastic voice-changer toys.

I remember reading about a technique that Ron St. Germain used on a Living Colour record. They stuck a mic in the middle of a satellite dish, and had the vocalist sing into the dish, so whenever he'd move his head around the reflections would cause all sorts of wild phase interaction.
Anyway, pretty cool idea.

Holy crap, it's Ben! "Breasts" to you my friend!
I've always wanted to start singing a song in the next room--like be carrying an acoustic guitar and do the whole voice-and-acoustic parts together--and then gradually draw closer and closer to the mic, only arriving in the "right" position on the last note of the song. I will have to actually do that sometime.
There's a song by John Linnell, "Nevada," where the backing band to his voice is a marching band, recorded outside. And then at the end of the song, the band keeps playing and just walks away, and you hear them receding farther and farther down the street, until all that is left is the sound of people getting into their cars and driving off.

Man, I'm stealing this idea. do ya mind? I dig it!inverseroom wrote: I've always wanted to start singing a song in the next room--like be carrying an acoustic guitar and do the whole voice-and-acoustic parts together--and then gradually draw closer and closer to the mic, only arriving in the "right" position on the last note of the song. I once tried sort of a reverse of this on the drums... as the drums were recorded me and the other engineer slowly rolled the 2 room mics closer and closer to the kit... we used tape on the floor and a string looped through the front of the kick drum (and tied to each mic stand...pulling the two strings equally as we guided the mics closer) to try to maintain "the equal triangle" relationship of the two mics...might have been over thinking it, since the the room dimensions dictated a little phasey weirdness in passing, anyway.. but the results were pretty groovy and matched with the dynamics of the song nicely...

It'd probably change your relationship with the staff too.
