Echo Layla 24

Post by Where's Russ » Sat Oct 20, 2007 10:42 am

Sooooo...I bought myself an Echo Layla 24 to use with my 002R and Yamaha Mc1602.
The stupid thing I did was not realize I needed software to route the Layla.
Luckily I have an old HP laptop that I can use.
Bad thing is I don't have the PCI card I need.
I'm pretty sure the Layla's connection is a DB9 cable.
My question is if anyone knows if I could purchase a generic DB9 PCI card and if it would still recognize the Layla 24?
Or would I have to hunt down an original Layla PCI card?
I've just contacted the company via email. so I'm still waiting on a responds.

Tank you!

layla pci cards, just by themselves, pop up on ebay for cheap quite often.

otherwise, i don't know if you can use a generic one.

all i can say, is that i swear by echo audio for a/d multitracking.

I agree. I had a Layla WAY back in the day before going to Ptools and it sounded better than the 001 or 002. I'm on Auroras now soo....haha.

you have an HP laptop with a PCI slot?

are you sure you don't mean PCMCIA?

and yah, my 6 year old Layla 24 is still going strong and sounding great.

it's easily the best part of my recording setup.

Well I'm glad I chose a good unit. I read somewhere that the Layla likes to over heat.
Anyone have problems there?

What's the difference between PCI and PCMCIA?

I'm trying to use the Layla for an Analog to Adat converter to my 002.
any suggestions to make it happen?

Thanks guys!!!

nevermind about the PCI/PCMCIA question...I did the smart thing and looked it up!

I do have a PCMCIA slot on my laptop.

but

Would a generic PCI or PCMCIA DB9 card work with the Layla?

or

Would I have to get the original card?

:shake:

My Layla randomly died. I never figured out why. I think I sold it for parts on Ebay. Then again, I only paid $300 and this was 5 or 6 years ago.

a PCI slot would only be found inside a desktop machine on the motherboard.

a PCMCIA card fits into a PCMCIA slot in the side of a laptop and is seldom if ever found on a desktop machine.

and, like granite and pistachio nuts, they are totally different beasts.

the answer to your question is YES, you will need the original card cos there's some DSP stuff on there along with other things.

i'm pretty sure they did make a PCMCIA card that will work with the Layla 24, tho.

btw, the cable for the Layla 24 may terminate in db9 connectors, but the cable is wired weird...so you'll need the one Echo sells (you can buy a replacement from them).

Cool, I figured that's what would be the conclusion.

I guess now I sit and wait for the company to contact me back.

Thanks for your help and I'll keep you guys updated on my progression.

Cheers!

Me too! I had to (sadly) give up my Layla when I converted to a Powerbook, as I could not find a card for it. I briefly had a Motu 828 mkII, and sold it ASAP for an echo audiofire 12.

Love this thing.

man, i have you all beat, i'm old school.

i use a layla 20....SCREW YOU AND YOUR EXTRA 4 BITS

i like mine. the things i've noticed between it and my friends MOTU card is that the layla can take a lot more before distorting out.

by the way, mine gets hotter that a whore in church. i mean, so hot i'm scared to bolt it in my rack due to lack of air circulation. anyone elses get really hot??

I have a pair of Layla 20's that are rock solid and they still sound good to me. Mine will get warm but not hot. I have then racked next to each other and they still rock my world.
