Need Help Installing New Internal Hard Drive On 2.0 G5

Post by Catoogie » Tue Oct 30, 2007 8:16 am

Hey,

I bought a second internal hard drive for my G5, 2.0 Dual Core which I use only for recording (the G5 not just the hard drive), and since I don't know a shit load about computers I'm a little nervous about installing it. I have in the past installed a couple of gigs of RAM so I have opened the thing up before.

Can anyone PLEASE walk me through this. I have the second drive because I heard you should two, one for audio and one for applications........is that right? So is the second one just going to have the recorded audio on it? Where would BFD go? The plug-ins still stay on the 1st drive? HELP!!!

Thanks and sorry for being so lame I don't know this shit yet.

The Apple instructions are probably the best to follow. It's pretty simple. The only (slightly) tricky part is connecting the cables to the drive because there isn't alot of length to play with.
I'd follow these instructions:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Power_ ... e_2005.pdf

But the quick run down is this:
Shut down the Mac.
Touch the mac to discharge any static.
Unpug the power cord.
Open'er up.
There should be 4 guide screws located next to the drive bay. They're just hanging there in some rubber thing. Take those out and connect them to the new drive. They guide the drive into the bay.
Under the 1st drive is the empty slot for the new drive. There may be a latch on the right that helps hold the drive in. swing it up if it's down.
Slide the drive into the slot.
Swing the latch back down.
Connect the SATA and power cables. They are stored in a slot under the bays.Just pull them out (gently) and Put them in.
Close up the Mac.
Connect the power cable.
Boot.
Enjoy.
This is all from memory so really follow the Apple PDF.

Good Luck

So I installed the second hard drive tonigth, when I powered on I got a message saying

Disk Insertion (With a Bog Red exclamation point)

Disk you inserted was not readable by this computer

When I open disk utility I can see the original hard drive and I can see and I can see the second one....what should I do?

Try this

Open up Disk utility in the Utilities folder.
Select the new drive.
Click on Erase
Set Volume Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Name it.

I think that should be it.
