Tuning... and know-how

Post by Signalflow » Wed Oct 31, 2007 12:57 pm

There's nothing quite like recording a drummer who really, and I mean REALLY, knows how to tune their kit. I worked with a drummer this morning who may have had some of the best sounding toms I've ever heard. Now if only I could work with Glenn Kotche......

yeah. really in-tune drums are a thing of wonder.

if they know how to hit them too then you are really in business.

My very first studio experience was at a very cool studio in SF (Division Hi-Fi) with very, very cool engineer Scott Solter, and our drummer had the very worst set ever. A 12 year old Pearl Export, with toms that I saw on more than one occasion rolling down the flight of stairs at the 'Paradise Lounge' (now out of business, fuckin yuppies!) I mean you could see light between the rims and the skin. They were ovals, I kid you not. Poor Scott.

It is pretty crucial. A few months ago a young engineer came to me for a tuning lesson before a big record he was starting. The same engineer has hired me to tech for an upcoming session.

At the Central IL Tape Op Night this weekend we're going to start with a drum tuning lesson.

I'm jealous. At the last Portland TapeOp night, we started with just beers.

A great drummer who knows how to tune drums can make even the crappiest kit sound good.

I just got all new heads for my kit (a Yamaha Beech Custom) including top and bottom snare and kick heads and had two very trusted drummers tune it up (one after the other by a few days) and it is sounding better than ever.

What he failed to mention is that strippers are going to be doing the drum tuning. Hot ones. That show up with free beer. And nachos.

I'm really good at tuning beers if any one needs me.
Beers sound best with a stripper in an XY pattern.

No it's not rocket science, but not everyone knows how to do it. It just takes practice. Knowing a couple good tricks and theories goes a long way.
