Cheap Fet47

Post by Where's Russ » Thu Nov 08, 2007 2:46 pm

So I'm two or three months away from opening my studio doors.

But I'm now looking for a nice outside kick mic.

When I worked at Gravity Studios, I fell in love with the Fet47!

But I can't afford that nor is it easy to find.

any suggestions on a mic around 100 to 200 bucks?

Studio Project B1 or B3?

anyone, anyone?

maybe a mxl 2001 or v67 with the dorsey mod, its an fet circuit, IIRC based on a fet47.

Can you stretch a bit and get an AT 4047? It's a cool FET mic that's kinda 47ish I've been told. I only have limited experience with a real FET47 and I know it's richer than the 4047. $047 is really cool and useful. Its about time for me to bring them back into the rotation more often, I veered away for a while.

the shure KSM27 can work well as outside kick..it lacks certain qualities of the kind of mic a 47 is but it does like a good job in that spot..

I wish. I'll have to see after a few months and my studio is up and running. Maybe I'll get me a Neotek too! MMMmmm

I've used an AT4047 on kick for the past 2 yrs for every project that I have done.

I have a really good FET47, and I still wind up with a blue mouse on the front kick once in a while. Either that or an SM7. The SM7 sounds kind of more like the FET47 than the mouse, but the mouse has more punch.

hey russ, it's michael.

i'll 3rd the 4047. it's definitely in the ballpark of the fet47.

mxl 2003 is cheaper and 'darker' than the at, imo.

When they were getting started, SE Electronics used to crank out a new catalog of mics every 6 months or so until they started getting endorsements, distributors, etc. I got a FET condenser from them in 2003 that reminds me a lot of a FET47. The first one actually arrived with a mismatched gray body and black grill, which I returned. the second was all black. I believe the model# was SE 2200. Cost me about $160. The early SE mics were pretty inconsistent in sound and quality... It took me 3 tries to get a tube mic from them that sounded right, but I would never part with the $300 SE5000 that made the cut. If you can find one used, be sure to give it a listen first.

The 4047 is essentially the answer to any question about affordable fet47-a-like-s.

The KSM27 was the first condenser I ever bought when I was starting out. It didn't take very long before I found out that I liked it on kick. In hindsight, I guess it does kinda sound a bit like a leaner, more present version of a fet47... Once you've EQ'd that 47... taking out some midrange murk and boosting the upper midrange it to poke out of the mix a little more. So, it doesn't really sound like a fet47 at all, but it can do the trick.

I sold it the buy "nicer" gear. I figured it wasn't worth it to keep it around because it was really inexpensive, and if I bought something more expensive, it would be a good call. That's a stupid way of thinking. I miss it on outside kick every once in a while. But not so much that I'm about to rush out and buy another.

I have a 4047, and I use it on out kick all the time. It is much more similar sound to a fet47 than a KSM27 or any other cheap LDC I've heard. Additionally it's killer as a second mic on guitar cab, on some bass cabs, as a FOK mic and on on 1 out of 5 male vocalists. Some people like it on acoustic guitar. I hate it there. To each there own.

On the other hand, I can't think of anywhere else I ever liked the ksm27.[/i]

I'm a HUGE FET 47 fan. Not to be a real downer, but there have only ever been three mics that have even come close to reminding me of a real FET 47 and none of them costs $200 or less. But one of them is really, really close to nailing that sound on a kick drum.

I can say that on a relative budget, the 4047 is a cool mic. It's no FET 47, but a cool mic, nonetheless.

I did also hear what is apparently a semi-inexpensive SE mic on a kick drum once that was sort of FET 47-esque, but I was playing on the session and there was a REALLY good engineer there, so I don't know what sort of EQ or anything may have been involved.

When I was starting out, professionally, I got a lot of mileage out of using an AT 4050 outside the kick sometimes. While the 4050 is a little more expensive, the 4040, which is slightly different, is a really terrific microphone for the money. I've had limited experience with this mic, but I think it's a really versatile and good-sounding microphone. Might be worth a listen.
